Russians, Iranians, Americans, Nazis, Israelis, and Argentines go for each others' throats in the search for real, fake, old, and new gold in at least two hemispheres. Hagberg (Countdown, Cross Fire) also writes as Sean Flannery (Counterstrike, Crossed Swords). The mystery guest enters the American Embassy in Paris and signs in as Kirk McGarvey. He conducts a bit of fake business about a lapsed passport and then wanders off on his own to plant enough plastic explosive to demolish the building and then slips outside to push the button. The real Kirk McGarvey, an out-of- favor CIA assassin, recognizes the professional signature of Arkady Kurshin, the Russian superagent that McGarvey himself had shot and thrown overboard in the middle of the Mediterranean. Could Kurshin have survived? And is he carrying out a personal vendetta? He could and he is. McGarvey, who hadn't been doing much of anything, suddenly has his hands full searching for Kurshin--whose Paris job is just the first in a series planned for all the major European capitals--and also searching with a very tense, very sexy brunette for a missing Nazi submarine, last seen off Argentina. The U-boat's captain was the brunette's father, and there was a very valuable cargo--possibly a load of ill-gotten gold the size of a shipment from the US to Iran that McGarvey must keep from disappearing into the Soviet Disunion. As exciting as it is Explosive...

Our hero, Kirk McGarvey, makes an explosive comeback in this thrilling adventure which jumps from one place on the globe to another with the speed of a Tomahawk missile. I have long felt that McGarvey was a combination of James Bond, Jack Ryan, Dirk Pitt & Indiana Jones rolled into one...and he is in TOP form in 'Crossfire'.
Arkady Kurshin, who Kirk thought he had 'taken care of' in his previous adventure comes back to serve up a heaping dose of revenge against the one man who has turned his life upsidedown and who very nearly killed him. Arkady is one of those villains you almost root for--ALMOST, because he is so much fun as the bad guy, and gives Kirk such a run for his money that you are left almost breathless as you read along.
I also VERY much enjoyed the addition of the submarine in the plot. WELL done, Mr. Hagberg. I enjoyed virtually everything about this novel...in fact as I look back on it, I cannot think of ANYTHING which I did NOT enjoy. Kirk McGarvey is easily one of the most entertaining characters I know in print today, and as long as he keeps making comebacks in Hagberg's novels, I will be lining up to purchase his books. 'Crossfire' rivals almost anything written by Clancy, and for sheer adventure/action, Kirk can keep pace with Dirk Pitt any day. If I had to sum up this novel in one word, it'd be this: FUN.

an Exciting Action Book!

Kirk McGarvey once again gets to do battle with his arch enemy Arkady Kurshin. McGarvey had thought that he had killed Arkady Kurshin on the cosst of Syria. Kurshin survived his battle with McGarvey by killing his rescuers,some Syrian troops. Kurshin makes his return by blowing up the American embassy in Paris and placing the blame on McGarvey. McGarvey rescues several people from the exploded embassy including a woman from Argentina who is searching for a sunken Nazi submarine. She hooks up with McGarvey and they find the submarine only to discover that it has fake gold. They obtain a list from the submarine telling the na,mes of Nazis who know where tje gold is. In the meantime the Americans have returned the Iranians their assets in the form of gold. Arkady Kurshin and some of his KGB gang are going to steal it. McGarvey stops them buts gets badly wounded. Kurshin is also wounded in the battle. McGarvey and the woman find the location of the gold. A tremendous battle takes place in a castle in Lisbon involving McGarvey,Kurshin,Israeli agents,and guards who work for the Nazis. Kurshin is finally killed. A very good read. This was a book that I could reccomend to anyone.

More magic from the master of action adventures.

Kirk McGarvey is still at it. Protecting the world from people that would kill James Bond. Crossfire is a cross the world action adventure that involves many twists and turns that was an adventurous read, but the enemy McGarvey is after should have been someone else. But still, it is a great book for people who like 'continuing' adventures. You should buy and read Countdown before you read Crossfire.

Too Much PJ?

I must confess, I am a big fan of P.J. O’Rourke. And while I may not always agree with his politics or opinions, I almost always find his work entertaining. This book represents some of his work over the last 30 years or so.

* O’Rourke is one of those writers whose work either you like or hate. Almost no one I have ever met is neutral on the subject. As always, his writing is sarcastic, humorous, tongue-in-cheek, serious, funny, sad, happy, offensive, sensitive and just about any other adjective you can think of.

* Some of the works reprinted in this anthology are P.J. at his absolute best. His tale of tourism in war-torn Lebanon tells more about life in this part of the world than any serious story I have ever read on the subject. Likewise, I found myself laughing out loud at his descriptions of a “Peace Tour” of the Soviet Union- and at the same time gaining an understanding of what life was like.

* While O’Rourke definitely skews toward the conservative or libertarian end of the political spectrum, his is not a zealot about preaching doctrine. He points out humor, silliness and ridiculousness wherever he sees it, including in his own experiences and past history.

* The book is a nice sampling of O’Rourke’s work. My personal favorites of his stories are those relating his travels in various war-torn countries and underdeveloped hellholes. He has a remarkable talent for relating daily life, showing something of the good and bad in the residents and hanging out with the “fun” people.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* The book is long. It might be a bit much for someone not used to PJ’s writing style, especially if you try to read the whole thing at once.

* Some of O’Rourke’s work is timeless, but some his not. His tales of drinking and driving from 30 years ago just fall flat in the face of modern social values. Also, some of his more historical writings may be lost on younger readers who have no memories of the Iron Curtain or the Soviet Union.

I had read many of the stories in this book previously, but I enjoyed rereading most of them. For the most part, I enjoy O’Rourke’s writing style and observations, and many of them are still relevant. While much of his commentary is somewhat political, it is not the diatribe of the talking heads, but rather a look at the strange happenings in the world through the eyes of a conservative commentator. If you haven’t been exposed to the author previously, you might want to sample one or two of his works before taking on this anthology.

A field guide to the best writing in O'Rourke's books since 1983.

I have been a fan of P J O’Rourke’s for several decades. While I admire him and enjoy his writing I do no mistake him for a partisan Conservative or someone who is working for the GOP and against the Democrats. He is willing to skewer everyone; everyone who deserves skewering. And that is, well, everyone. I have always found his writing informative, enjoyable to read, his humor always seems like it should be more predictable and repetitive than it is. He is wittier than you suppose and slips the knife in but you laugh before you understand exactly where it has been placed, maybe in you and yours.

Some have referred to this as a greatest hits album. I guess it is. But I think of it as a way to peruse his best writing from his books over the decades and see how his views have changed and what has remained more or less constant. What he had hoped for (not much) and what disappointed him (nearly everything). If O’Rourke has one flaw that makes me put down his books and give them time to rest before I pick them up again is that I find it too pat to just piss on everyone and everything. In his work that matters to me the most, he does find some hope, some positive energy and a real effort to make the benighted wake up.

While I do not claim to have read every word that the author has written (and here we only get excerpts from his books, not samples of his columns), I do have more than a few of them at home and my favorites are: “Parliament of Whores”, “Give War a Chance”, “All the Trouble in the World” , and my favorite of all is “Eat the Rich”. I also enjoyed “The CEO of the Sofa” and “On The Wealth of Nations”. Do I have to point out that it is perfectly fine if your views vary from mine?

So, why would someone who has all or most of this author’s books want to get this one, too? Is it just a form of OCD? Is it a desire to make a wealthy writer even wealthier? Simple. If you don’t buy into my earlier statement of strolling through his best writing in one shorter hike than rereading whole books, think about it another way. If, like me, you are old enough to have purchased his books when they were new and enjoyed them when they were in the news, you now likely have children (and possibly grandchildren) who are adults and have likely NOT read O’Rourke’s works.

Why didn’t they read them, because he was YOUR author and therefore utterly uncool in their youthful world. But now they are older and reconsidering their values (revaluing their values as their once beloved Nietzsche once put it). They are not going to push through the whole book or understand the references to current events. Here we have the writing the author and the editor think that best stand on its own. You can give them the gift of O’Rourke in one handy field manual!

One thing we do not get in this book, beyond the brief introduction, is the author’s views of each of the works, reminiscences about writing the book, the struggles with the editor, a recounting of the way the critics and public reacted to it at its release, or the settling of old scores. We just get the writing. And that is fine. We enjoy the author for his writing, after all. Maybe he will give us a different book wandering through the corridors of how he went through his own life. But I kind of doubt it. Confession really doesn’t seem to be his thing beyond the persona he has created as a device for his writing. I have no idea how much of what the author says about himself is real and how much is a writing device. And even if he told us what was what, would he be leveling with us? Who knows.

a greatest hits compilation

I have to admit that based on the blurb I was expecting articles from The National Lampoon, Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, various car magazines, etc. Instead the material in this book is all taken from his previous books by this same publisher. As someone noted; a greatest hits compilation. It's like ordering a greatest hits album from an artist and realizing the songs are from one of the artist's labels, but not from all of the labels on which the artist recorded. Would love to have an anthology of his writings from all of those other miscellaneous sources.

Ginger Levin, DPA, is a senior consultant and educator in portfolio management, program management, the project management office, metrics, and maturity assessments. She is an adjunct professor for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, the SKEMA University in Lille, France, and the RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, and has consulted with major corporations and various government agencies in the United States and abroad. Dr. Levin received her doctorate in information systems technology and public administration from The George Washington University, receiving the Outstanding Dissertation Award for her research on large organizations, and is certified as a PMP, PgMP, and OPM3 consultant and assessor.

Excellent Text For Graduate-level Project Management Course

When the publisher of the book I had intended to use deleted it from its catalog, I hunted around and found this. Dr. Levin had previously co-authored multiple books on project HR, communication, and stakeholder management, so I ordered a review copy. I was amazed to find that she covers topics that I thought I was the only person discussing. She covers the three PMI KAs fittingly, and integrates them into the project-program-portfolio context well. The book is also a good read. Highly recommended.

Perfect reference and help for experienced project and program managers.

Working in Fortune 50 companies, as an experienced program and project manager of 15 years, this was always a nice reference and read to levelset and assist with typical problems and help improve some of the areas of PM we don't always think about on a daily basis. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to improve on their current skills and expertise.

This may not make exact sense for new PM's or PgM's, but it could be a good read and reference for the future as you get more experience, you can know where to get background and help on easily.

Quite an excellent reference

I found this to be an excellent reference with two caveats... after buying the book online I was mildly disappointed to discover the cover illustration was in no way indicative of the interior illustrations. The entire book consists of line drawings and B&W photos, most poorly executed, but adequate for the purpose of the book. Second, the book slights the 17th century and is really more useful to readers interested in the ships of the 18th century. Otherwise, the information provided is substantial and a good companion to Nelson's Navy.

Another "must-have" book for ship modellers

This book is a fitting companion to James Lees' "Masting and Rigging of English Ships of War 1625 - 1860".

It's written in much the same vein, and has some very good insights on the actual fitting out and arming of these ships (and the small boats they carried as well).

There is nothing on Rigging in it - in fact the author points out that this is covered adequately in books like Mr. Lees'.

Lots of good line drawings, prints of old engravings and drawings and photos of models of the era covered are accompanied by a comprehensive and very easy to understand text.

why 6000 dead in 2001 terrorist attack?

The book starts with a reciting of the events of the terrorist attacks in September 2001. Unfortunately it is deeply marred by the claim that 6000 people died. That estimate arose during the confusion of the early days of the attack. But by 2004 it was clear that the death toll was far less. Closer to 3000. And today the usual number is 2998. Also, when the second edition of the book was output in 2008, the 6000 number had been long discarded.

Phil Gordon is back, and in better shape than ever

In my opinion, Phil Gordon is the best poker writer out there. He writes in a straightforward, clear language, which is really easy to follow. I've read all his previous three books and also his DVD, and I was really afraid that he had given up writing, since his previous book was released five years ago. I am glad to say that Phil Gordon is back, and in better shape than ever.

In his private life, Gordon had gone through a quest of improving his own game, since poker players have evolved quite drastically in the past few years. And it is rare to see a poker expert publicly admitting that he had to step back and re-study the game. The Gold Book is the result of this quest.

The book starts with lots of math that will make the head of most readers to spin. But don't give up. Soon enough things will get clear as the author shows tools and techniques that will for sure improve your game. While some of them were already featured in the author's previous books (such as the "squeeze" play, a.k.a. "fish'n'chips"), this time he explains more in depth the math behind them.

This is a book that you will have to re-read several times to be able to get everything it has to offer, especially as your game improves. In the end, it will make you to completely re-think your game. And that is why this book is so good.

The only "negatives" I can see with this book is that this time the author didn't put a lot of jokes in the text. You see, the typical Gordon jokes inserted inside the book (e.g. "feeling like the time I had bad shellfish in an all-you-can-eat buffet in Kansas City") help me to memorize the concept he is explaining. Also, even though there is a chapter with some hand examples, I'd prefer to have some real examples after each concept is explained. He did that here and there, but I wanted to see more! I hope Phil Gordon writes a follow-up book only with real hand examples, just like he did with his Blue Book.

On a more serious subject, for a book released after "Black Friday" and the demise of Full Tilt Poker, I think the author should have re-vamped the parts he talks about online poker and Full Tilt in particular. For example, he mentions that Chris Ferguson was able to create a $126,000 bankroll starting from zero and that Phil Galfond also has accumulated an on-line bankroll of same magnitude, but didn't say anything about what happened to player's online bankroll after "Black Friday."

BTW, around 20% of the book is dedicated to PLO (Pot-Limit Omaha).

Phil's best and among The Best

My poker shelf has around 100 books on it,
but this one will be among the 3 or 4 that
get re-read, underlined, highlighted and
referred to over and over.

I think it's the best book Phil's written, and
I've considered all the "Little" books good.
Within the poker writing universe, Little Gold
Book goes into more depth than just about any other,
and likewise has a lot of breadth for one book.
And while I consider most poker books to be
targeted at the beginner turning intermediate
(including Phil's previous writing), this book
does a great job of covering the ground from
intermediate well into advanced.

As usual in Phil's writing, he speaks conversationally
and is easily understood, even when digging into
somewhat involved mathematics and advanced concepts.
Another aspect of his writing that I really appreciate
is his ability to look at a topic from several angles,
rather than covering the obvious points and moving on.
In Gold Book for example, he'll often make the
mathematical case for a given play, work out the logic
in great detail to prove his point, but then take it a
step further by reminding you of "meta considerations"
and opponent psychological factors that you can't overlook.
For me, I find this helps keep me out of the mode of
just "playing the numbers" and lets me visualize the other
factors while reading and while playing.

Perhaps Phil's strongest skill as a writer, and
one that Gold Book shows off more than any of
his prior books, is his ability to group and classify
information into easily remembered collections.
Going beyond the obvious groupings of hand types,
Phil further classifies things like board texture,
opponent style, tournament situations, etc.
This gives the reader a huge advantage when trying to
apply the material; it's much easier to remember and
learn and then apply it in real time at the table.

I consider myself a non-pro advanced player, and
I learned a ton from this book that was new to
me and I'm sure will be valuable. I'm glad Phil gets
satisfaction out of giving away (well, for 15 bucks
anyway) his hard earned lessons!

Phil is Golden but this one is very Advanced

From what I've read so far in the Gold Book, it seems like it was geared towards internet players, or those getting started playing on the internet (before online poker was shut down) but the information is still valuable and impressive. I've read both the Green and Blue books which were much easier to understand (it should be said that I am not finished with the Gold), but I am also not a math whiz. The math is not necessarily difficult to pick up after a few read overs, but I just can't see myself being able to apply this at a live poker table in Vegas, or live poker table anywhere with 100% accuracy. In his other books, Phil gets into how to put your opponents on a hand based on what you know about their style, betting patterns, pre and post flop, etc. With this book, it seems like you will have to almost memorize what hands your opponents are playing from different positions, and factor that not only into what hand they might be holding, but also the pot odds and implied odds as compared to whatever hand you have, how many outs you have, whether you want to differentiate your playing style in order to change gears, etc. Its just a lot, and I don't think its for beginner to intermediate players at all. Start with the Green Book or maybe the Black Book which seems very simple. Work your way up. There is a reason the subtitle is "ADVANCED lessons for mastering Poker 2.0". That being said, if you can process it and have a very quick math brain, as well as a great memory, and lots of experience, definitely get the book as Phil is a fun read and you will likely learn a lot. But on a side note, I'm glad the internet poker sites have been shut down, who knows how safe their servers were anyway, and now these math whizzes can't just rely on their geek status to win hands. They will still be strong at a live table, but they may not know their own tells, not be familiar with Casino distractions (like the cocktail waitress leaning over you with a monster set of Dub Ds to take your order) etc., and be out of their element. Still, novices and intermediate players need to be careful because these guys are out there and undoubtedly good.

A Definite Must Read!

Everyone who listens to mainstream financial advisors is in for an unpleasant surprise at retirement time! It's not how much you make that counts, it's how much you keep! David McKnight shows you how to position your assets so taxes won't erode the wealth you've built for your family. Keep more of the hard-earned money you've saved in your pocket and not give it up to Uncle Sam, who, by the way, is broke!

Minimizing taxes in retirement with reservations

McKnight thinks that taxes are very likely to increase. To protect your retirement income he feels it is necessary to target a 0% tax bracket in retirement. He aims for a taxable income small enough that you would be covered by your personal exemptions and the standard deduction, currently about $20,000. If you achieved then there is no tax on your Social Security income. The author brings up some excellent points. In particular the fact that large accumulations in tax-deferred accounts can generate large MRD requirements after you reach 70.5 years old. This in turn can make most of social security payments taxable, it’s similar to double taxation. He suggests thinking of three portions or buckets of investment resources. The first bucket is 6 months income. This is to protect against adversity, and is taxable.

The second is the tax-deferred bucket, which would contain IRAs, 403b, etc. After you retire and reach 70.5 years old you are required to take out a minimum required distribution each year. If you have a large accumulation then the taxable MRD can be quite large and can cause your Social Security income to be taxable. He suggests moving as much as possible of this money from the IRA or other retirement account into a tax-free bucket such as the Roth IRA.

The third is the tax free bucket made up of a Roth IRA and the life insurance retirement plan (LIRP), and some possible tricks you might be able to do with your IRA or other plans. The Roth IRA is the least controversial and a great deal, but is very limited in the amount you can contribute while working. In retirement you can contribute up to the amount you earn working. Since most people don’t work in retirement they cannot contribute anything. However 403b and other deferred accounts can be converted to a regular IRA then the money is converted to a Roth IRA. This process requires you to pay Federal tax and probably State tax on this conversion.

His argument is that this is worthwhile since he believes that taxes are currently lower than they will be in the future. So converted funds overall will require less taxes now than you would pay on MRD in retirement, and could keep your Social Security benefits untaxed. This strategy might allow you to pay fewer regular taxes and keep Social Security benefits from being taxed. It also has the advantage that the Roth is not subject to estate taxes.

His other suggestion is to use a life insurance retirement plan, LIRP, that could possibly serve as life insurance, long-term health insurance, a source of possibly untaxed return of funds. The money in the insurance policy can be invested in various ways all of which supposedly tax exempt. He considers the long term cost us about 1 �% over long time periods for this type of annuity. Most other estimates are much higher for these costs.

Although there appeared to be advantages to this annuity generally these plans are in reality found to be restricted, costly, and very difficult to get out of. If you search the Bogleheads site with the title of this book you’ll find a wide-ranging discussion on the disadvantages of this type of insurance plan. In particular the author appears to have connections with the insurance area. This is an area with some possibilities, but they are complicated instruments that are difficult to understand, and have a lot of potential problems.
