why 6000 dead in 2001 terrorist attack?

The book starts with a reciting of the events of the terrorist attacks in September 2001. Unfortunately it is deeply marred by the claim that 6000 people died. That estimate arose during the confusion of the early days of the attack. But by 2004 it was clear that the death toll was far less. Closer to 3000. And today the usual number is 2998. Also, when the second edition of the book was output in 2008, the 6000 number had been long discarded.
Note too that this edition says much has been revised from the first.
So why the author uses 6000 is puzzling. A major mistake that is in the introduction. It can act to undermine the reader's confidence in the rest of the book. Which is actually quite well done and comprehensive.
