About the Author
Marilynn L. Rapp Buxton currently teaches the 4th–6th grade talented and gifted program at Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools in Waverly and Shell Rock, IA. She also teaches a self-designed curriculum of creative and critical thinking skills in classrooms, is editor of two elementary yearbooks, and coaches Future Problem Solving teams. She received a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and has taken numerous graduate courses through Drake University, University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, Marycrest College, and Viterbo University toward her K–12 gifted endorsement and educational certifications. Buxton received the prestigious Distinguished Service Award at the Iowa Talented and Gifted conference in Fall 2008 for outstanding achievement and service to gifted students in Iowa.
Her curriculum ideas and student projects have been published as a "Teacher Feature" in Iowa Talented and Gifted Magazine. She authored Math Logic Mysteries and More Math Logic Mysteries, published by Prufrock Press. She is currently writing several other activity books for publication. She also authored Itsy Bitsies, four leaflets of counted cross-stitch designs and was featured in Cross Stitcher Magazine.
She has presented at the Iowa Talented and Gifted Conference, Wisconsin Talented and Gifted Conference, Midwest Regional Middle Level Conference, area gifted and talented forums, and local staff in-services. She enjoys spending time with family, swimming, singing in Sweet Adelines International, Harmony Rox a cappella quartet and church choir, doing Sudoku and matrix logic puzzles, going for walks, and playing 500.

These are actually fun to do!

My daughter (6th grade) asks to do these instead of her regular math. I allow it sometimes because it really gets her thinking critically. Whereas her math curriculum teacher her how to do different kinds of math problems (important), the challenges in this book get her really thinking (equally important), so I think it's a great math supplement.
I have her photocopy the page to work on it so she wont be tempted to look at the answer page, and if my husband is home she makes an extra copy and they race each other. She is determined to beat him one of these days. This is one way to get her excited about doing them. I also offer, on some rainy days, to give my kids a dollar for each one they complete. They are excitedly cranking them out, and I'm watching them challenge themselves and get smarter!

Math Bafflers are challenging and are a super collaborative game.

The sixth graders in my general education classroom find Math Bafflers a great way to work collaboratively while practicing their critical thinking skills. Every Friday is Math Bafflers math day, and I use the Table of Contents page to choose the Bafflers to go with the math topic we are studying. Students may work in groups of two or three and solve the puzzles. Emma says, "I enjoy Math Bafflers because they are challenging and when we solve them, it makes me excited." Jawan likes them because it helps him learn about different ways to solve problems, and Capri feels like she has definitely accomplished something when she is finished. Matthew sums it up by stating, "they take real life situations and put them in problems."
I added two Math Baffler pages to the end of the last math unit test. Students who finished the test early had an enjoyable time solving the matrix puzzles quietly working while their peers were finishing the test. I have used both the Math Bafflers for Grades 3-5 and Math Bafflers for Grades 6-8. I am always happiest when my students are enjoying math and growing in their problem solving ability. I highly recommend Math Bafflers for use in the classroom.

Super book for skill development and high school prep...

Having been a student of Marilynn Buxton, I can directly attest to the effectiveness and quality preparation this book provides for middle school learners. I was fortunate enough to have been taught through these very puzzles by Marilynn herself during my middle school years, and found as I progressed through high school that the skills and techniques these types of puzzles develop are cross-curricular, forward thinking, and real world-applicable. Problem solving skills are easily utilized in other areas of study, and I found that these types of puzzles truly do foster that. I am currently preparing to begin my college education in the area of middle school math and history education and have already set aside copies of Marilynn's books to use in my own classroom someday. I would encourage any middle school educator to do the same.
