About the Author
Mirza Waheed is an Indian writer who was born and raised in Kashmir. This is his first novel, and it was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book award and the Shakti Bhatt Prize. It was also longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize, and was named the Book of the Year by The Telegraph, the New Statesman, the Financial Times, and other newspapers.
A writer for BBC, the Guardian, Granta, Guernica, the New York Times and the Al Jazeera English, Waheed currently resides in London.

excellent book

I have really enjoyed reading this book. It opened my mind to a situation and lives which we dont know much about. Its well written and easy to read. Even though the book is tremendously sad at times, its easy to read and keeps the reader completely engrossed.

This is an excellent first novel, and a sad, poignant, and much-needed introduction to the travails of Kashmiri citizens under Indian occupation -- the most militarized occupation in the world.

Although I am an Indian citizen and am quite an avid reader of fiction, have read very few thoughtful books on Kashmir. This debut book by Mirza Waheed presents a very thoughtful commentary of the issue. In addition to the way the characters have been developed, the sparse use of Urdu words and the description of the place makes the book a great read. I love Kashmir and this book makes me want to visit the place once again. Maybe next summer and looking forward to reading more books by the writer.
