The searing account of a war crime and one soldier’s heroic efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice

First published in the New Yorker in 1969 and later adapted into an acclaimed film starring Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn, Casualties of War is the shocking true story of the abduction, rape, and murder of a young Vietnamese woman by US soldiers.

Before setting out on a five-day reconnaissance mission in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam, Sergeant Tony Meserve told the four men under his command that their first objective would be to kidnap a girl and bring her along “for the morale of the squad.” At the end of the mission, Meserve said, they would kill their victim and dispose of the body to avoid prosecution for abduction and rape—capital crimes in the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Private First Class Sven Eriksson was the only member of the patrol who refused to participate in the atrocity. Haunted by his inability to save the young woman’s life, he vowed to see Meserve and the others convicted of their crimes. Faced with the cynical indifference of his commanding officers and outright hostility from his fellow infantrymen, Eriksson had the tenacity to persevere. He went on to serve as the government’s chief witness in four courts-martial related to the infamous Incident on Hill 192.

A masterpiece of contemporary journalism, Casualties of War is a clear-eyed, powerfully affecting portrait of the horrors of warfare and the true meaning of courage.

You should be made aware of what came after this book...i.e. "the rest of the story". See below...
By R. Huntington
I will fill in one blank, so to speak, that others did not. That is, the real life hero whistle-blower in this true story, was warned in advance, by a high level officer (during an attempt to deter him from his pursuit of justice), to the effect th at military courts are known for extreme leniency and minimal sentences, so why bother, nobody really cares anyway, and also the accused and obviously dangerous "rapo girl killers" might likely want to exact revenge, and will very soon be on the streets to do just that, while anger is still running high. Well, at the end of the movie you will witness the sentences that are handed down. Lenient yes, but at least they served perhaps a medium of time in prison, maybe. You readers will be led to believe that the CO was wrong, because at least a medium of a sentence was handed down by the court. The sentences would have made the newspaper reading public as well as the victims family feel that at least a little bit of punishment was meted out. And our hero Erikkson might have though his efforts worth it, at least a little bit of justice was done. But the story actually doesn't end where this book does. If you search "Casualties Of War" at wikipedia, you will learn that shortly after the news fanfare died down, and the public forgot about it and went on with their lives, all those sentences were modified. You will be shocked to learn the leniency of the modified sentences. To avoid being a spoiler, I won't say reveal that here, but will most earnestly recommend that you first watch the movie, then read the book, then go to wikipedia to "Casualties of War" and at the end of the page you will find the real sentences.

As an aside, some of you may be old enough to remember another atrocity, the horrific headline news of the "My Lai massacre" during the Vietnam war, and how the Officer who lamely interpreted his orders to mean that he should execute 22 unarmed civilians, was eventually sentenced to life in prison. A life sentence!! Hmm, so the public and the victims families probably had some satisfaction that at least some justice was done? But later, without headlines and fanfare, William Calley, Jr. former United States Army officer found guilty of murdering 22 unarmed South Vietnamese civilians in the My Lai Massacre on March 16, 1968, during the Vietnam War, after several reductions, his original sentence of life in prison was turned into an order of house arrest. But after three years, President Nixon reduced his sentence with a presidential pardon. (this paragraph sourced at wikipedia)

Sadly, the lesson learned from a sampling of follow-ups on real life war atrocities, is that if you want to avoid battle, you can opt to go on a spree of atrocities and, though there is only a slim chance you might get prosecuted, if you do get charged you will be sent stateside, which is where a deserter or a coward would rather be, right? And then you can count on having your sentence reduced to perhaps less time than you were contractually obligated to serve in the war you decide doesn't suit you. An easy out, if you have no conscience to bother you. You will be a civilian on the streets of the USA sooner than the guys you went through boot camp with, and perhaps living next door to any of us. You will have a dishonorable discharge, which used to mean something to employers in America's better days, but is never even mentioned anymore, and anyway it's easy enough to lie about on an employment app, so this is no big concern to our lowest crust of soldier. So there it is, the way to get an early out. Doh!!

One of the most gut-wrenching indictments of war ever written
By J from NY
New York Times writer Daniel Laing's chronicle of one young soldier's helplessness in the face of appalling evil. The rape, torture and murder of 20 year old Vietnamese peasant Phi Than Mao in the Highlands of Vietnam by the other four members of his patrol, all of whom for reasons of confidentiality are changed (along with the protagonists, who is given the unlikely name "Sven Errikson") is a war crime that even with the Mai Lai massacre and the depraved behavior of some US soldiers in Afghanistan as revealed by the recent WikiLeaks, defies comprehension.

This story was given a pretty good treatment by Brian DePalma in the 1989 film Casualties of War (Unrated Extended Cut). The real story, of course, is infinitely more complex and gruesome.

The leader of Errikson's patrol and instigator of the crime, 20 year old Sergeant Tony Meserve, was a decorated soldier who had only 30 days left in Vietnam. From Brooklyn NY, his behavior around the time of the atrocity (November 18, 1966), was characterized by other soldiers as "erratic". He would fire at Vietnamese civilians sometimes simply because "he felt like it". Ralph Clark, whose behavior reads like that of a textbook psychopath, not a "war traumatized soldier", was from Philadelphia. The other two, brothers Rafe and Manuel and Diaz, were from San Diego. They seemed "affable" but quick to bow under Meserve's commands.

Before leaving for a patrol which was characterized by African American lieutenant Reilly as "high risk", Meserve related to the rest of the patrol that it would be "good for the morale of the squad" if they "picked up a girl for some boom boom." They would carry her around, rape her, then kill her when she became inconvient. Which is exactly what they did despite Errikson's attempts to stop it.
Trapped in a sweaty jungle with four other men who had signed a pact with the devil and numbed their conscience, he was told repeatedly that if he did not participate in the rape, he might become a "friendly casualty" and end up coming home in a bodybag. Though he was unable to save Mao's life--I'm not sure how he could have--he immediately went to the authorities upon his return to base.

He was dissuaded in every fashion imaginable from going public with the knowledge. Two attempts on his life were made by friends of the other four. The military pulled every trick in the book, offering him any position he wanted, even a discharge, until Errikson finally told Lieutenant Reilly that he wanted to be a door gunner, was not going anywhere and was not shutting his mouth.

What's even more horrifying than the murder was the result of this man's valor and honesty. When the four were finally court martialed, the defense questioned Errikson's sexuality, brought up the possibility that Mao was indeed a "VC sympathizer", and let him know very bluntly that military tribunals were notoriously lenient and that he might want to think about his wife at home. Sent to Fort Leavenworth as a penalty, all four of these men were released at a fraction of their stated sentences. Great for Errikson and his then newborn daughter.

Though this book is about an incident in Vietnam things have changed very little. Soldiers who are honest are afraid to stand up to the "boy's club", and incidents like this are actually innumerable in the lost war of Afghanistan. Read this and understand what it means to sneer at ideas like world peace. Recommended for anyone who wants to understand conscience, what war does to men, and how the "military tribunal system" for war criminals actually works.

sad truth
By steven walsh
i knew what i was in for when purchasing this book because i had seen the film that was based on these events and i must say that it was the only film i have ever seen that i could not watch a second time because it is a truly sad truth to what people do and the reason i purchased the book that these events were told was to read the more accurate and true story of such terrible crimes , the satisfaction i got from this though is that these events were eventually brought to light and could not be covered up.

I need to know a fair amount about ipv6 in my job, but our core business isn't IPv6 networking. This guide is at the perfect technical level for someone like me. Who doesn't like an Assassin with a conscience?
By EDD
We liked Angel in Buffy, Belthazzar in Charmed and we now have Erevis Cale as our semi bad guy who trys to do good. This book is really gritty and down to earth. No airy fairy type crap in here. I liken it to David Gemmell's "Waylander". Dark but good.

Cale is an assasin/butler whose master is dead. He decides to leave his employment and is hunted down by a vicious band of terrorists( joking), shapechangers who are after an artifact which will gain their master power.

The race is on for Cale to find out what the Hell is going on and why they are after him. His only companions are a halfling theif/cleric and a ex Zentil Keep assasin who really doesn't like either of them. Trust is pretty low.

When i say Cale tries to do good, i mean that his basic intentions are good but he has no problem getting down and dirty solving a problem, or torturing someone to get what he wants.

This book far exceeds the majority of Forgotten realms books i have read or sold ( I work in Dymocks Garden City Perth) and i should know having read my share of FR books. Now we all like our Salvatore books with Drizzt but i have to say that i like Cale better, not only can he fight, but the story is darker and you get that feel that the lights are down low and monsters around the corner. Also Mask the god isn't so much of a pansy as i have read in other books. With Salvatore you get that knight in shining armour feel which can get predictable after a while.

Dark But Far From Empty!
By Joe Rixman
Rarely do I come across a book that so quickly and completely captivates my imagination. Twilight Falling, the first novel of "The Erevis Cale Trilogy," is one such book.

Paul Kemp has crafted a novel of dark fantasy, rife with meaning, tone and richly detailed characterization, all the things you would wish from an outstanding work of literature. Along with an interesting plot and a writing style that practically forces the next page to be turned, This is among the finest fantasy novels I have read in some time.

Erevis Cale is an assassin, who, at the beginning of the story, also works as a butler for a powerful merchant family in an part of the Forgotten Realms known as Sembia. This book starts off where a previous novel of Mr. Kemp's, "Shadow's Witness," ends. The death of the family patriarch has provided the impetus for Erevis Cale to move on, to leave behind the life of family butler and to embrace his new role, that of a Priest to the God Mask, Lord of Shadows.

As Cale puts it, several times, Mask is a bastard, and rarely do things go well for Cale as he, and a former rival Drasek Riven, another assassin, are drawn into the schemes of a mage the god Cyric the Mad and his attempts to transform himself into a Shade, a being of shadow that is practically immortal. Along with Cale and Riven is Cale's friend Jak Fleet, a Halfling cleric and a former member of a group of do-gooders called the Harpers. These three heroes must discover who is trying to kill them and why before the Shadow Mage accomplishes his task.

Throughout the novel, Mr. Kemp creates characters that, for want of a better phrase, are as real as possible in a fantasy setting. Erevis Cale is constantly at war with himself. Is he a cold-blooded murderer, like Riven, or does he have a good soul, as Jak believes. The answer is a resounding yes...to both questions. Even Riven, who soul is perhaps the darkest of them all, finds levels of goodness that he isn't even aware he has, caring for two stray mutts and ensuring their health long after he is forced to leave them behind. Jak, the conscience, is willing to take the steps toward darkness after a violent and disturbing experience leaves his near death.

The tone of this book is dark, brooding and crammed with action and violence that, while not overwhelming, is not what one would expect in a Forgotten Realms novel. This, however, is one of the book's strengths, as it lends an almost realistic feel to the swords and sorcery otherwise being employed by the characters.

Finally, what makes this novel stand above most other fantasy, specifically shared-world, work, it the depth of exploration Mr. Kemp gives to the themes of this story. Redemption, friendship and loyalty are all given their just due by each of the characters, all of whom arc beautifully from beginning to end. As in life, our experiences change us, sometimes for the better, other times not to much. From the first page to the last, each of the three major characters experiences this arc...and leaves you gasping for breathe as the last scene unfolds...and sets you up for Page One of Book Two, "Dawn of Night," which you absolutely MUST begin reading immediately upon finishing Twilight Falling!

By Kris Miranda
The Forgotten Realms, and most shared fiction universes, tend to be disdained as less-than-substantive, and the writers as second-rate folks who don't have what it takes to get a "real" book published. Once in awhile, sure, a tie-in book is mediocre, but don't you get that everywhere? A lot of authors have proven time and again that tie-ins can be pretty damn great, and Paul Kemp is one of them.

The only complication about entering the Erevis Cale Trilogy is that it really helps to have read the entire preceding Sembia series, starting with Halls of Stormweather. Only Shadow's Witness stars Cale and is by Kemp, but the story of the Uskevren clan is made up of many threads, and a few of those are tied up in Twilight Falling. One can go on and enjoy the book, of course, but a more complete attachment to Cale - and yes, the other stars of the Sembia series - is necessary to fully appreciate certain moments. It also helps to have read a post-Shadow's Witness Cale short story whose name escapes me at the moment, but which is now available for free on Mr. Kemp's website.

Whew. Enough intro. One of the first things one might want to say about a Kemp novel (or a Salvatore novel or a Gemmell novel) is that the action, the fighting, the choreography, is great. And it's true. But don't make the mistake of thinking that action-heavy equals plot/character-lite. I believe a mantra Kemp goes by is "don't write action sequences; write suspense sequences that require action to resolve." It's an approach that's worked very well, and the reason is that suspense, I think, requires a level of affection for the characters in the predicament. A mindless fight with characters you don't care about is unfulfilling. A fight with characters you do care about, but with a conclusion that you can see coming, is also unfulfilling. But when the outcome's up in the air... Yes, there's plenty of great action in Twilight, but none of it is unnecessary, and little of it is predictable.

Kemp's created a terrific ensemble cast, giving his antagonists as much care and attention as his heroes. Of course, in Selgaunt, one is advised to use the word "hero" loosely. Cale is a decent man at heart, with iron discipline. What makes him interesting is why he needs that discipline, why it's so admirable. Like many of my favorite fantasy heroes, he's got a potentially dangerous temper and a talent for violence, and though he does his best not to let these consume him, when it's necessary to cause some pain, he doesn't hold back. Some might agree with his style, others might not -- because Twilight is written in a fairly tight POV, there is no omniscient authorial apology or justification for Cale's actions, only what he thinks of them and what his companions have to say. You make your own judgment, and that's a good thing. You're not being preached to in Twilight, even if it sometimes seems like some characters are preaching to each other. There's enough internal conflict and uncertainty that the answers aren't easy.

Difficult answers in a fantasy novel? And a shared-universe work at that? Surprised? Well, don't be. Kemp doesn't so much give us good and evil as virtue and malevolence, and assorted motivations and worldviews that keep things interesting. There's no take-over-the world scheme here, or destroy-all-that-is-good-and-beautiful. No, the motives make more sense, because they're more personal, and personal, I feel, is at least a little more plausible than sweeping and world-encompassing. These characters are people, not plot devices, and that, ultimately, is the reason these books are so good.

The DeLorean Story: The car, the people, the scandal, by Nick Sutton

This is the inside story of the DeLorean saga written by a senior manager who worked with the company from beginning to end and saw it all. The short life of the DeLorean DMC-12 sports car – a vision of the future with its gullwing doors and stainless steel body – began after John DeLorean secured financial backing from the British government for his car-making venture in Northern Ireland. Four years and nearly 9,000 cars later the company went bust and DeLorean faced questions about fraud against the British taxpayer, and his big ally, Colin Chapman of Lotus, also drew scrutiny. As an insider’s account, this book contains a great deal of new information about the DeLorean scandal.

He started a few weeks after ‘ground-breaking’ in December 1978 as the 16th employee and was one of only 10 employees left at the very end, following liquidation in 1983. Two years after closure he became a director of Lotus Cars, which designed and developed the DeLorean DMC-12. He lives in Belfast.

and how the attempt failed ending in a colossal waste or (it is still uncertain) embezzlement of money
By Marco Costanzi
A strange story, mixing politics with engineering and contemporary history. It is the story how the English government tried to create new workplaces in a depressed area near Belfast and ease the social unrest that stoked the Civil War in Northern Ireland by subsidizing a car factory producing the (now) famed DeLorean car, and how the attempt failed ending in a colossal waste or (it is still uncertain) embezzlement of money. At the same time it is the story of a group of people that put all their heart and mind in a project that looked so fascinatingly crazy to attract enthusiasts and visionaries from Europe and America. At the end of the book, the reader maybe will close it with a sigh and a thought: "what a pity!".

John Z unplugged
By steve
What a good read. I enjoy learning about what really happens when cameras are not rolling or someone is pushing something and it isn't for fun its the job they do. I like the hands on blue collar version that makes clear some misconceptions are no accident. I haven't had a real opinion of John Z as I was born in late 73. I do remember that in Moore Oklahoma, Gene Williams (gone) Chevrolet had a DMC sign well before a single car. So I knew a tiny bit before the movie that made a flop a cultural icon. I have since ridden and driven a few DeLoreans and never mind my 82 280ZX Turbo would run off and hide from one it still is a neat car. I still will take a Z or maybe a C5 Vette but the car has a colorful enough personality that pricing aside ( To little performance for so much money ) and the factor that it will retain value if you take care of it, Makes it a bucket list car for me. The troubling aspect is to build North Ireland up so much at such a volatile time with, as the author says, "The Troubles" Between promises never even being planned on to keep and having a factory with a Catholic neighborhood on one side and a Protestant on the other you know people were prime for any good thing to come. Well, in the end it didn't happen. If you get a chance, The DMC site has some interesting papers regarding that the later ones that were "better" still needed over 50 hours of repair at port before they went to the US dealers. Some of the things ( Razor blades taped into the wiring harness to the radio that had no fuse and shipped that way, 20% of the cars were sabotaged this way causing untold injury in the US ) are real low that were done for multitudes of "Reasons". No. The guy who gets hurt fixing your trap has the right to knock you senseless, He is not the one who screwed the employes over. And the ones that did the screwing got off and away as always. I like the narrative style of the writer. I feel he could write full time. Good book.

By Mack W. Shelton, Jr.
I found myself laughing out loud at some of the stories from Mr. Sutton. I also found the story informative and with much more information that other books I've read. The pictures in this book show a company growing, testing, experimenting, and the ultimate downfall. But the story of how Mr. Sutton met John DeLorean was an eye-opener, of how he was given a toy model to use for cost analysis of the DMC-12, and how the brand new offices didn't even have a working coffee maker installed, yet. The story includes the inner conflicts of the staff and the problems making the DMC-12 on time, and the story behind the Gold DeLorean. This is a must-have for any car enthusiast.

From the Back Cover

The Sacred Geometry of the Great Pyramid - From the Drawing Board of its Architects, by Ernest F. Pecci, MD

It is now widely accepted that the builders of the Great Pyramid knew of a science that far exceeded our own. Whoever built the Great Pyramid knew, among many other things, the precise circumference of the planet, and its distance from the sun, the length of the year to several decimals, and how to utilize the value of pi in its construction. Coded within its geometry is the secret of universal measure. The question remains as to the purpose that it was built. Through discovering the measurement used by its architects, this book uncovers the geometric code to its hidden meaning, a key to opening the door to a new science that bridges the two worlds between the seen and the unseen, the manifest and the unmanifest.

Review
I found your book a remarkable testament as to how the ancient Pyramid architects went about designing the inner and outer structural features of the Pyramid. Congratulations! --William A. Tiller, PhD

About the Author
After attending Harvard University and serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Dr. Pecci earned a degree of Medical Doctor, with distinction, from Tufts University School of Medicine. He had his residency in Psychiatry at the Langley-Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute in San Francisco and a residency in Child Psychiatry at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco. He has been a practicing psychiatrist for over 40 years. He was the founder and President of Rosebridge Graduate School of Integrative Psychology, a fellow in Community Psychiatry at the University of California School of Medicine and a lecturer at John F. Kennedy University. As a popular speaker during the 70 s and 80 s at scientific and metaphysical conferences he made many acquaintances with prominent people in diverse fields of study such as Dr. William Tiller, then chairman of the Department of Material Sciences at Stanford University, holistic medical author, Dr. Norman Shealy, and Hugh Lynn Cayce, son of Edgar Cayce. During his professional career he served as medical director of the George Miller Jr. Centers for Multi-handicapped Children and Adults in Contra Costa County, California. He also served as chief psychiatrist at the California Youth Authority in northern California. He is the founder of the PSI (Psycho-Spiritual Integration) Process and the author of numerous books, including, Guidance from Within and Rise Above It. Dr. Pecci s book, Chess: A Psychiatrist Matches Wits with Fritz with a foreword by Garry Kasparov, changed the strategy and tactics of chess in a previously unseen way, having a significant influence in the way chess computer programs are now written. He collaborated with Stanford professor Dr. William Tiller and wrote a foreword for his book, Science and Human Transformation, in which he describes how his interest in sacred geometry coincided with the idea of subliminal energies from other dimensionalities interwoven into a flowing pattern. Dr. Pecci became interested in and began his own research on the Great Pyramid in the early 1990 s. This research has been a continuing passion for him for the past twenty years, and during this period he has made numerous original observations and correlations that are being presented here, in this book, for the first time..

The secrets of the Great Pyramid revealed
By Clara Szalai
A monumental work, well written, with well reasoned arguments leading up to the necessary conclusion. The Great Pyramid's geometry is well explained, so even if one is not familiar with geometry, he'll learn from reading. The new interpretation of Hermes Trismegistus' allusive statements become the sensible conclusion after the explanations of the Great Pyramid's geometry; all life and matter bearing the geometric inner relations of the Pyramid provide the reason for the Great Pyramid's existence. Your book certainly changed some of my biased views about the meaning of (geometric) forms. The beautiful design of the book is awe-awakening, in perfect proportion with its contents.

Excellent Power System Book
By Anagha
I am a graduate student at Power Engineering and still using this worthwhile book. Dr. Saadat covers almost all of the useful topics in power systems in this book well; and absolutely easy to understand. If you want to work or study in power, I strongely recommend you to have this book as a nice reference!

Good book for power system analysis, however
By Khaled Abdulkareem Alobaidli
I recommend this book, I purchased in 2011 and Almost didn't use it back then. However, I'm using it now and realized the books papers are falling apart while flipping the pages which is very annoying. My bad I can't return it now.

Be careful if you purchase the book to check once you receive your copy.
