About the Author
Marilynn L. Rapp Buxton currently teaches the 4th–6th grade talented and gifted program at Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools in Waverly and Shell Rock, IA. She also teaches a self-designed curriculum of creative and critical thinking skills in classrooms, is editor of two elementary yearbooks, and coaches Future Problem Solving teams. She received a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and has taken numerous graduate courses through Drake University, University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, Marycrest College, and Viterbo University toward her K–12 gifted endorsement and educational certifications. Buxton received the prestigious Distinguished Service Award at the Iowa Talented and Gifted conference in Fall 2008 for outstanding achievement and service to gifted students in Iowa.

Her curriculum ideas and student projects have been published as a "Teacher Feature" in Iowa Talented and Gifted Magazine. She authored Math Logic Mysteries and More Math Logic Mysteries, published by Prufrock Press. She is currently writing several other activity books for publication. She also authored Itsy Bitsies, four leaflets of counted cross-stitch designs and was featured in Cross Stitcher Magazine.

She has presented at the Iowa Talented and Gifted Conference, Wisconsin Talented and Gifted Conference, Midwest Regional Middle Level Conference, area gifted and talented forums, and local staff in-services. She enjoys spending time with family, swimming, singing in Sweet Adelines International, Harmony Rox a cappella quartet and church choir, doing Sudoku and matrix logic puzzles, going for walks, and playing 500.

These are actually fun to do!

My daughter (6th grade) asks to do these instead of her regular math. I allow it sometimes because it really gets her thinking critically. Whereas her math curriculum teacher her how to do different kinds of math problems (important), the challenges in this book get her really thinking (equally important), so I think it's a great math supplement.

I have her photocopy the page to work on it so she wont be tempted to look at the answer page, and if my husband is home she makes an extra copy and they race each other. She is determined to beat him one of these days. This is one way to get her excited about doing them. I also offer, on some rainy days, to give my kids a dollar for each one they complete. They are excitedly cranking them out, and I'm watching them challenge themselves and get smarter!

Math Bafflers are challenging and are a super collaborative game.

The sixth graders in my general education classroom find Math Bafflers a great way to work collaboratively while practicing their critical thinking skills. Every Friday is Math Bafflers math day, and I use the Table of Contents page to choose the Bafflers to go with the math topic we are studying. Students may work in groups of two or three and solve the puzzles. Emma says, "I enjoy Math Bafflers because they are challenging and when we solve them, it makes me excited." Jawan likes them because it helps him learn about different ways to solve problems, and Capri feels like she has definitely accomplished something when she is finished. Matthew sums it up by stating, "they take real life situations and put them in problems."
I added two Math Baffler pages to the end of the last math unit test. Students who finished the test early had an enjoyable time solving the matrix puzzles quietly working while their peers were finishing the test. I have used both the Math Bafflers for Grades 3-5 and Math Bafflers for Grades 6-8. I am always happiest when my students are enjoying math and growing in their problem solving ability. I highly recommend Math Bafflers for use in the classroom.

Super book for skill development and high school prep...

Having been a student of Marilynn Buxton, I can directly attest to the effectiveness and quality preparation this book provides for middle school learners. I was fortunate enough to have been taught through these very puzzles by Marilynn herself during my middle school years, and found as I progressed through high school that the skills and techniques these types of puzzles develop are cross-curricular, forward thinking, and real world-applicable. Problem solving skills are easily utilized in other areas of study, and I found that these types of puzzles truly do foster that. I am currently preparing to begin my college education in the area of middle school math and history education and have already set aside copies of Marilynn's books to use in my own classroom someday. I would encourage any middle school educator to do the same.

This volume completes Russell's history of the concept of the Devil from antiquity to the present. (The series includes The Devil, Cornell, 1977; Satan, LJ 10/15/81; and Lucifer , LJ 11/15/84.) The concept, fragmented somewhat by the Reformation and even more by the rise of rationalism, became in the 19th century a powerful symbol of rebellion against aristocracy and "an ironic metaphor of the corruption and foolishness of humanity." In the 20th century genocide has made the Devil theologically and philosophically an issue. Russell largely succeeds in being the objective historian who carefully pursues the persistence of this concept in popular culture, art, literature, philosophy, and theology. About the Author
Dr Nic Fields started his career as a biochemist before joining the Royal Marines. Having left the military, he went back to University and completed a BA and PhD in Ancient History at the University of Newcastle. He was Assistant Director at the British School at Athens, Greece, and then a lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Edinburgh. Nic is now a freelance author and researcher based in south-west France.

Ancient Greek Fortifications

Very clearly written and with excellent illustrations as usual in this series. Many general popular accounts of Greek warfare do not do justice to the role of fortifications - thus this book is a valuable addition and reference.

Good overview of Greek fortifications in the West

This is a rather good overview of fortifications in the West (essentially continental Greece and Sicily) during the fifth and fourth centuries BC.

The section on buildings methods is careful to link these to both financial and labour constraints with the title beginning with these down-to-earth and very practical limitations. This, in turn, largely informs the heavy and extensive use of mud bricks with stone only being used for the foundations and lower levels. The various masonry styles are presented a bit quickly - they are for instance more developed in the Osprey title on Greek fortifications in Asia Minor - although this seems to have been a deliberate choice made by Nic Field and it does give him more room for his overview of a selection of major sites.

The sites selected include Athens, with a relatively long piece showing how the City Walls, the Long Walls and the fortifications of Pireas, which were built and updated over time. Two other interesting choices are those of the cities of Messene and Mantinea, both of which were built after the Thebans had broken the Spartans at the battle of Leuktra (BC 371). They were part of the cordon of city fortresses (the third was Megalopolis) which were meant to contain the Spartans. Other choices include border forts controlling major access points and roads, in the Megarid and in Attica.

The section on "the sites at war" includes the siege of Platea, that of Syracuse (the only fortress West of Greece to be included in this volume) and that of Mantinea by the Spartans, before the city was rebuilt. Also included, almost as an afterthought, is the siege of Paphos in Cyprus by the Persians in 498 BC. A number of sieges have been left out. There is nothing, for instance, on any of the sieges conducted by Philip of Macedon. Many sites have also had to be omitted including those of Northern Greece and Thrace, or Magna Graecia and Italy. Also missing are the fortifications of Syracuse that kept the Carthaginians at bay several times, as developed during the fourth century.

The section titled "Nature of conflict and society" is also interesting. It includes developments of hoplite warfare that go some way towards explaining why siege craft was initially underdeveloped in Greece. Having mentioned this, the topic of hoplite warfare covers some 7 pages. It may have been given a bit too much space at the expense of siege warfare, the real topic of this title although, to be fair, the author does make a good case for introducing it.

Finally, the plates, photos and diagrams are good and support the main narrative rather well. This title is therefore worth a solid four stars and offers a good overview, introduction and starting point for anyone interested in Greek fortifications during the "Classical" period (as opposed to the Hellenistic period).

Fairly good overview of its topic...

This volume on fortifications follows Osprey's standard format for the "fortifications" series. Chapter 1 covers building methods, the second provides details on 5 sample fortifications, chapter three provides a an overview of the nature of conflict for the ancient Greeks and the role fortifications played therein, the fourth chapter provides examples of some sieges of fortifications and the last chapter provides details on some of the sites today. With respect to all of these chapters, given the fact they are only a few pages long (the entire book is only about 60 pages in length) does a very good job in terms of an introduction. The illustrations are especially good and are very well supplemented by the author's own collection of photographs. The photos and cut-away drawings give an especially good idea of how the various portions of the fortifications looked like and what functions they served. The photos also give one an exellent impression of how many of these look like today. In addition, considerable work has been done on incorporating the views of ancient authorities on the role of fortifications and histories of sieges.

All and all a very good investment of one hour's worth of reeading if that is all you can spare for an introduction to this topic.

It Makes The Mose Sense of Any Deck I've Used!

I've tried many decks before picking up my first set of these cards. I use them so often I'm purchasing my third deck! I had a lot of trouble understanding the meaning behind the tarot cards until I picked up Cosmic Tarot. Everything suddenly became clear. The pictures are nice to look at and not confusing. They symbolism is clear and helpful. The court cards make more sense than any other deck out there. I highly recommend this deck for anyone.

THE BEST DECK EVER!

I've been using the Cosmic deck for about five years and I love them! I found the deck in a catalog, on a whim I bought it and has been love ever since! The deck is both magical, intense, intimidating, colorful, beautifully drawn and yet simple (for me that is). I love some the pictures of the characters bec. I compare them to real life people. For example, the Prince of Pentacles looks like Charles Bronson (even though he doesn't exhibit those characteristics), the 4 of Wands looks like Deanna Troi from Star Trek. I must warn you that the deck isn't for everyone (what deck is?), but for me it's very intense, which is why I love it. I look at the pictures and can see so much! When I have done readings I have received so many compliments over how beautiful and different this deck is. I have used the Rider deck and never felt the bond I feel w/this deck. I have to tell you, if you do buy this deck, YOU MUST BUY THE ACCOMPANYING BOOK! There are pictures and meanings that do not correspond to "regular" tarot cards, but then again, every deck is different. This is the only deck for me! I call them my "buddies!"

an excellent deck for inner work

German artist Norbert Loesche has produced a set of creative and highly evocative images for this deck, which follows the same interpretative framework as the Crowley's Thoth deck. Although the images draw from several eras and cultures (some figures are patterned on modern icons, such as movie stars), they hold together in a kind of turn-of-the-century continental ambience. The faces on the cards show more personality than in just about any other deck. In addition, the artist has an excellent appreciation of the relation of Tarot to qabalah and astrology, so the deck is not superficial in the least.
The book (by Jean Huets) reflects some careful study by the author of this particular deck, and is highly recommended, as the "common" Rider-Waite interpretations do not always fit well.
This is an excellent first deck, because the artwork makes the ideas so accessible. It will also be rewarding to the serious Tarot student and reader, particular if your interest is in inward, spiritual work (the deck has a rather introspective focus, sometimes challenging or disturbing). It may be less suitable for reading for querents who expect an antique style and a fortune-telling slant.

I received a copy of this book from the Hurricane Readers group in exchange for an honest review.
Book 3 of the Boss's son series continues to follow the relationship between Britt and Jack as they start to plan for their future, everything seems to be falling into place for the couple until a tragedy strikes and almost breaks them apart. It will be interesting to read the next book to see what happens next.

The series was well written. ..with laughter, tears, romance, love, loss, and a bit of angst...what more does a book need, other than another book...lol
More stories regarding other characters developed in theses 3 books are in the works, and will keep the storyline going. That gives me a happy face!
