HVAC-R purchase

About the Author
Nicholas Carah is a Lecturer in Communication at the School of Communication and Arts at the University of Queensland.

His research examines the interplay between media technologies, brands and everyday life. In particular, he has focussed on how media technologies are used to promote, perform and regulate alcohol consumption. Together with The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education he has published research on the use of Facebook by alcohol brands in Australia.�He has also worked with the social change start up Hello Sunday Morning to design and evaluate their use of social and mobile media technologies to change drinking cultures.

Carah’s research has been published in New Media and Society, Television and New Media, Convergence, Consumption, Markets and Culture, Mobile Communication and Culture, Health and Journal of Public Affairs. His 2014 article ‘Brand value’ was awarded best paper in Consumption, Markets and Culture.

He is the author of Pop Brands: branding, popular music and young people (Peter Lang, 2010) and Media and Society: production, content and participation (SAGE, 2015) and the forthcoming Brand Machines, Sensory Media and Calculative Culture (Palgrave).�

Eric Louw, School of Communication & Arts, University of Queensland, previously worked for a number of South African universities (University of South Africa, University of Natal and Rand Afrikaans University), and ran a NGO engaged in development work.

Those two words say a lot, especially to Americans. Wow. We get the most complex bento boxes in history (yeah, I'm going to try Soma's), and a pair of really neat ramen recipes as well as more cooking insights.

My wife purchased this book for our Kindergartener after she (my daughter) had requested it. She had seen it in her school library and was very excited to show us how funny the idea of "hopping on pop" (on me!!) was and that she could read some of the words. After we got it, she found that she was able to read the whole thing all the way through. She was so surprised and proud of herself! If you want to build confidence in your child and develop a love for reading-this is a great book.

The reason this is so great for an early reader is pretty genius! The book starts off easy enough, with a couple of rhyming phrases per page (like; HOP ON POP, etc.). As the story moves on, the rhyming words are replaced (sometimes only by changing out a letter-as in H-A-T to C-A-T).

While a simple idea, it provides a great learning and reinforcement tool for your child that is twofold: (1) your child learns new words by "building" on a previously known word by having to change the initial sound to match the new letter on the rhyming word, and (2) by showing them the importance of letters and their placement in a word to change its sound.

The book is never overly difficult, but rather, perfectly paced for an emerging or first time reader. And of course, true to Dr. Seuss fashion, the artwork is engaging, wonderful and funny all at the same time. This is by far, my daughter's favorite book at the moment and she won't hesitate to offer to "read the whole book" to anyone who is willing to listen! She is developing a real love of reading from this.

If you are a "pop" or know of one with a new reader, this classic is just the ticket! Definitely a winner for our family.

Great for an introduction to reading

I loved reading this book when I was young and was excited to introduce it to my child who is in the first stages of reading. My 4 year old can't read every word yet, only 3/4 letter words, but those can be found on almost every page so it keeps his mind going. It's also great that some of the sight words he'll need for kindergarten are incorporated so he'll have a head start for class in a couple of years. If you're looking for a story line, there isn't one, but I can say the wackiness is very entertaining. I read other reviews that have said that this version is a rewrite, however I didn't notice the differences. Maybe it's just been that long since I've read it. (Although I totally understand the frustrations of those who we're expecting original content.)

i didnt like dr. Seuss!I never read it, but i saw the pictures and thought it were the most heinous illustrations for a kids books!) I would never think that i would buy it and like it! My son brought it to me from the play area and asked me to read it for him. I did. He loved it! I realized how easy it would be to read for him himself. (Well, the one we saw first was Hop on Pop book). We ordered these two and it is our favorite goodnight reads now! Unfortunately, he memorized both books after one week so i dont know if we will make any progress on reading them since he just goes and "read" them 100% by memory. Very catching! Pictures are hideous! But i can look through them. but my so does ask me what are they??? Have no answer!

This would be a great book for the young ones who are beginning to read on their own. Simply the best ... worth 10 stars!

I've owned and read a number of books on Photoshop over the past 10 years. Many of these were simple introductions to the Photoshop interface. Many were 'cook books' that provided step-by-step instructions for a few special tasks, like retouching or color balancing. Only a few really covered Photoshop in a comprehensive way or in the way a professional photographer would need. And by this, I mean approaches that covered all steps from moving images off the camera/memory card, archiving and backup, and non-destructive editing. (They are NOT introductions to photography; you are expected to now how to operate your camera!)

Martin Evening writes the best books on Photoshop and Lightroom. They cover all aspects of the software. He is a professional photographer with many awards to his credit. His books are comprehensive in all ways that a photographer needs. And because of this they are in fact 'substantial' books; big, thick, heavy books. However, the writing is superb. When he give detailed step-by-step instruction, they are clear and well illustrated. Sometimes this goes well beyond my needs as a nature photographer. Martin does a lot of fashion work, so extracting hair details from an image so it can be pasted onto a different background gets detailed coverage. Such chapters are easy to skip, though, but if there's any chance you might need it, it's there. So I'm simply saying that you won't outgrow one of Martin's books.

They are typically a bit pricier than some, too. However, they are in full color throughout, printed on high quality coated papers, and screen shots big enough to actually see what the author is talking about. (Some Photoshop books have color images only in a central set of coated pages, some in fact only black and white! Books by some really good authors have incredibly small screen shots where illustration just don't work. Often screen shots covering topics like sharpening or noise removal just do not work.)

Martin has an earlier 'big book' on Lightroom. This particular books covers the Develop module almost exclusively. Through a series of editing sessions he covers all of the tools in this module in detail. And because the book is relatively new, it has all the latest features as well. And I will emphasize that as Adobe pumps out updates, Martin adds free material covering these new features to the book's web site. (He has done this for all his books, by the way.) Right now there are 8 videos that accompany this book.

I also note that Martin's Lightroom books now take an approach that acknowledges that Lightroom is part of the Adobe CC Photographer licensing option that includes Lightroom, Bridge, Camera Raw and Photoshop. This book clearly shows how some tasks are best approached by moving some images into Photoshop for editing, then saving back to Lightroom.

And it also means that all of the tools in the Lightroom Develop module covered by this book are fully applicable to Adobe Camera Raw. Yes the user interface is somewhat different between LR and ACR, yet the underlying pixel engine is the same. But the combination of ACR and smart objects in Photoshop is the cornerstone of a non-destructive work flow. So if you participate in the Adobe Photography license apps, and especially if you primarily use Lightroom, this book is another excellent addition to Martin Evening's book series. And also highly recommended even if you primarily use the Bridge/ACR/Photoshop workflow!

Adventures in Lightroom

Lightroom instruction books aimed at beginners usually explain how the sliders change an image, but seldom try to explain how moving the sliders can make art, or at least artful works. Perhaps that's appropriate since learning what the sliders do is a task in itself, without having to think of art.

In this book, Martin Evening goes to the next step, which is to take a number of images, and show you how he has used the various Lightroom controls on them to make them more artful. Along the way, he offers additional advice on how to shoot particular types of images. The chapters are organized functionally, rather just following the order presented in Lightroom, and the emphasis is on the use of the develop module. There are chapters on, among others, adjusting tone and color, recomposing existing images, and black and white conversions. There are what might be called tutorials, where the author shows you an image he started with, explains the changes he made in Lightroom, and occasionally Photoshop, with screen captures of various menus and the modified images, and the ultimate final version.

Evening assumes some familiarity with Lightroom and Photoshop and often doesn't provide a lot of detail on the tool or menu he is using so if one is not familiar with the software, one can easily become lost. In fact, if you want to learn Lightroom and Photoshop, this is not the book for you.

The information is pitched on a variety of levels. On the one hand, the instruction on the spot removal tool is rather basic. On the other hand, his solution for removing street hardware by combining two images shot a few feet apart was something I had never encountered before, although it made absolute sense.

Although there are no online images to download and manipulate along with the author, there are videos that repeat and reinforce some of the tutorials in the text.

Occasionally some explanations of technical topics required a second or third reading to understand, but this was more because of complexity. Generally, Evening's writing is clear and accessible.

To create an artful image, one must examine the original capture and decide how one wants it to look in its final form. If the photographer does that, then it may be a matter of simply applying the correct tools to reach that goal. It's not always apparent what those tools are, but I suspect Evening can help the photographer see more of those tools. He doesn't teach one how to analyze the basic image as such, but one can infer his process of analysis from what he does, and that can be quite valuable.

Once a user develops a good familiarity with Lightroom and Photoshop, it hard to say how to develop more advanced skills. Evening presents many good ideas and tools that will probably help someone who understands the basics of Lightroom and Photoshop gain those skills.

Best Ligtroom manual for techies

I am very technical and I want a Lightroom manual that is complete, explains how things work and it's not "cutsie" in presentation style. I don't want to wade through verbose presentation to get to the facts. If that it ts what you want then this is the manual for you.

Disappointing and poorly written

I love gossipy (particularly gay) Hollywood trash. Perhaps if I had not read "Hollywood Babylon: It's Back" first, I might have enjoyed "Idol Worship" more, but I doubt it. It is written in a style that simply slows down my reading, frequently having to go back and figure out what phrase was modifying what or wondering who/what the author was talking about. The author is very opinionated, although he seldoms shows the basis of these opinions. Rabbit trails are everywhere. I am still trudging through the turgid prose, which probably would have benefitted from an editor's closer reading before it was published, but I wouldn't reccommend it to friends. Ferguson lost me when he spoke of the "enormity of [Montgomery Clift's] talent." Yes, Virginia, he was very talented, but was he really evil?

Just because something is about gay people and probably by a gay person, it still has to follow rules of grammar and content to be good.

A Labor of Love

Michael Ferguson's "Matinee Idol," subtitled "A Shameless Celebration of Male Beauty in the Movies," makes a fitting companion to Daniel and Jackson's "Bent Lens," not becuase it's about gay film, or even gays in film--it is not--but because it rewrties Hollywood history from the point of view of a gay (male) voyeur. The journey is fascinating. Along the way, Ferguson offers tantalizing insights into the fantasy side of movies, as well as into the public and private lives of the actors who make them. His choices run the gamut of hunks from Valentino to Tyrone Power, and Jan-Michael Vincent to Gael Garcia Bernal, with occasional forays into such related subjects as musclemen and porn stars. There are extra-long articles on some of Ferguson's favorites, including Matt Dillon, Keanu Reeves, and Brad Pitt, but he also takes the time to pay homage to the occasional wannabe, such as Jack Beutel and Rodney Harvey. The text has a tendency to go on too long, and Ferguson may at times appear overly obsessed with the pubic trail that leads from an actor's belly button into his speedo, but that's a minor quibble, and the kind of thing that will inevitably appeal to some readers. Worse is the writer's frequent misplacement of his modifiers (as here on Bernie Schwarz's metamorphosis into Tony Curtis: "Like virtually every other Jew in town, a name change was mandated and he became Jimmy Curtis") and his problems with parallelism (as in this iconoclastic comment regarding "Some Like It Hot": "The film has been deified as one of the greatest screen comedies ever despite not being very funny and my opinion thankfully won't diminish the love audiences and critics have for it." In addition, as in "Bent Lens," there is no index; there is, however, an appendix of sorts, which offers a credit each for a near-exhaustive list of actors, including many not treated in the main text. One criminal, and puzzling, omission, is George Nader, who was doubly interesting in that he was actually gay, in addition to being a pal of Rock Hudson's and a '50s beefcake favorite. But everyone is bound to have his/her quibbles on the point of omissions, a fact that argues, in true Hollywood fashion, for a sequel to the text. I, for one, would buy it.

�Queer Eye view of the Movie Guys�

It's a fantastic read, a "Queer Eye view of the Movie Guys" for both guys and us gals! There are loads of interesting facts (obviously well researched), great tips on which movies your favorite guy will be found looking particularly sexy AND the book serves as a catalogue of new guys to try! If you love movie stars, gorgeous guys or an entertaining celebrity read that is actually literary, you've got to have this book. It will come in handy when you're trying to decide what video to rent next. It will be a reference book you'll want to keep next to the TV's remote in the bedroom!
