When the kingdom is attacked by evil magic forces, Will helps track down and defeat a couple of particularly nasty beasts. This closing episode sets the stage for a good-versus-evil war that will likely be at the heart of future volumes. In this opener, though, most of the story focuses on the learning process that Will goes through as an apprentice. Descriptions of Ranger craft are fascinating. Exciting confrontations with bullies and wild boars help to establish the boy's emerging character. Side stories involving a rival Battleschool apprentice and the identity of Will's father are woven in smoothly. The author occasionally spells things out more than is needed when actions demonstrate them clearly enough. However, the well-paced plot moves effortlessly toward the climax, letting readers get to know the world and the characters gradually as excitement builds. He earns the respect of his elders and the friendship of a former foe, but all this is prelude to the great adventure that follows, when his skills wielding a knife and keeping a heightened awareness of his surroundings become vital to the survival of his mentor and the safety of the kingdom. The last few years have seen the publication of many fantasies, but few have the appeal of this original story. Rather than creating a host of strange creatures and magical powers, Flanagan concentrates on character, offering readers a young protagonist they will care about and relationships that develop believably over time. Will's world is a colorful place, threatened by an evil warlord and his fierce minions, but it's the details of everyday living and the true-to-life emotions of the people that are memorable. Excellent series

A terrific series. My son started reading them and asked me to do so as well. I was skeptical but by about 20 pages into the first volume I was hooked. I have now devoured all 9 of them, and may well go back and read them all again in a year or two.

The main characters begin as children but grow up quickly throughout the series. Unlike too many "young adult" books, the adults are more interesting than the children, and the children realize that becoming an adult is something to strive for rather than resist.

All of the books are very funny as well as exciting. The "good guys" all have a wry sense of humor (obviously the author's as well), while the "bad guys" are typically overbearing and too serious. Children also fail to grasp the humor; growing up is shown as (in part) a process of coming to understand (and use) a rather dry wit with one's friends.

These are "sword and sorcery" type books, except that there doesn't seem to be any sorcery! Several people claim to have magical type powers, but the powers seem to all be fake, and the people who claim them are all bad guys. Several strange religious prophets also turn out to be hucksters.

The battle scenes are realistically told (though the skills of the protagonists are not always realistic). Death is not whitewashed; bones break and blood spurts and it HURTS. There is a realism to the entire series that is a wonderful change from typical "fantasy" fare.

There is no sex and only minimal time is given to love. The major virtues and concerns of the characters are honor, patience, friendship, a skeptical intelligence, and hard work. The characters struggle to master themselves and become better people.

In short: realistic, serious, and honest books about growing up -- all in a fun "epic fantasy" package. Highly recommended.

This book kept a bunch of 12 year olds reading

I got this book from our local library 2 weeks ago. My 12 year old son read it, and loved it so much he loaned it to a friend, who loaned it to a friend, who loaned it to a friend. Yes it was passed around THAT much. I was taking a group of them to church Wednesday night and the were talking excitedly about what sounded like a really awesome new movie, and when I asked them what the were talking about, of course, it was this book. My son was bummed to find out our library doesn't have the 2nd book of the series yet, so I'm here to buy them for Christmas.

After I had purchased the book a friend mentioned to me that the book was listed for the tweens audience. I thought of returning it but I am glad I didn't because the book is great! Flanagan writes very well and obviously understands a wide range of male age groups. I am 40 and I was hooked after the 2nd chapter. You really do start to like all the main characters and I can't wait for the next installments. And no I am not biased because my name is Will as well. ;-)

This book is well written and very entertaining. I recommend it for those with a good imagination and a appreciation for strong character writing.

From the Author
Petrified wood from the United States resides in museums worldwide, yet most Americans know little about the subject. I wanted to publish a book that would present photographs of some of the world's most beautiful and interesting specimens and also explain how these miraculous fossils form in such a vast array of colors and mineralization. Over the past several years I traveled thousands of miles and shot more than 7,500 photographs to produce this book. I also spent many late evening hours researching. The book's editors are recognized experts in their fields. Dr. Brooks Britt is Curator for Paleontology at The Museum of Western Colorado and Mr. Dayvault is a professional geologist with a long-standing involvement in the study of western minerals and fossils.

I hope that the quality of materials and construction are readily apparent. The paper is 100# glossy bond. While most mineral and fossil books have only small sections printed in full color, this book is 100% full color. The large format (the pages are 9" by 12") is well justified by the size of the photographs. We wasted no space in producing this book. Details such as the full color, printed end sheets are expensive additions, but well worth it in my opinion. Please remove the dust jacket to view the gold embossed design on the hard cover. Printing and binding the book entirely in the USA was also an expense with clearly visible dividends. Since the printing was done in my hometown of Grand Junction, Colorado, I could monitor every step of the process. The photographs were all shot on a fine grain, slow speed professional film (Fuji Velvia, rated at ISO 40) without the use of color-enhancing filters other than a polarizer. We spent many hours color correcting to ensure that the pictures in the book match the colors in the original transparencies.

Get on the Internet at www.amazon.com and search for petrified wood - of 2,500,000 titles available none were available on petrified wood until now. Check the library of Congress or any other library system catalog with the same results. You will find some textbooks on paleobotany that address petrified materials in technical, dry terms, and you will see a few books about Petrified Forest National Park and similar places, but you will not find a book like this. That is why I wrote it.

About the Author
Frank J. Daniels holds a degree in History from the University of Denver and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has served as the elected District Attorney for Colorado's 21st Judicial District in Western Colorado and is a member and immediate past president of the Grand Junction Gem and Mineral Club.

Brooks B. Britt was Curator of Paleontology at the Museum of Western Colorado. He holds degrees from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. from the University of Calgary. Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous dinosaurs are his primary field of research.

Richard D. Dayvault earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geology from East Carolina University, is a registered geologist, and is involved professionally in environmental remedial action work. Mr. Dayvault has been a consulting editor for Rocks and Minerals magazine for 25 years and has authored numerous papers on the geology and paleontology of Western Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. He is a member of the Grand Junction Geological Society, the Uncompahgre Plateau Paleontology Society, Friends of Mineralogy, and the Grand Junction Gem and Mineral Club.

Petrified Wood: The World of Fossilized Wood

The best photographic presentation of petrified wood I have every seen. Frank Daniels' love of the subject can be seen in his work as laid out between the covers of this superb book. I totally enjoy showing non palaeontologically minded people this book when they visit. If a person is looking for a photographic presentation of petrified wood, then this would have to be the book. I heartily recommend it. Congratulations Frank on a terrific book.

This is a beautiful volume that is a visual treat for any enthusiast in the area of geology, paleontology, rocks and minerals. It's an attractive "coffee table" book replete with page after page of gorgeous color plates of the world's loveliest petrified wood specimens. There are also text portions that explain the geology and history of the fossilized wood. Some of the paleobiological terms are quite technical. It's not for everyone, but the book is beautiful for those with eyes that find fascination in ancient trees that have now turned to mineralized stone.

Can they be that beautiful?

Iy you are a layman, you will certainly ask whether "rock like " items like these can be so pretty. When you read on and understand that nature is actually the artist behind them, then you will start to appreciate that their brilliant color, the pretty pattern as well as the variety of what used to be living trees in this planet millions of years ago are not any less beautiful than the common gems and precious stones which we are much more familiar with. The excellent photos will certainly tempt one to read the book again and again . The only regret is perhaps the lack of more publications on these gems, despite a second and equally attractive book by the same author.

Although most Americans no longer live in small towns, images of small-town life, and particularly of the mutual support and neighborliness to be found in such places, remain powerful in our culture. In Habits of the Heartland, Lyn C. Macgregor investigates how the residents of Viroqua, Wisconsin, population 4,355, create a small-town community together. Macgregor lived in Viroqua for nearly two years. During that time she gathered data in public places, attended meetings, volunteered for civic organizations, talked to residents in their workplaces and homes, and worked as a bartender at the local American Legion post.

Viroqua has all the outward hallmarks of the idealized American town; the kind of place where local merchants still occupy the shops on Main Street and everyone knows everyone else. On closer examination, one finds that the town contains three largely separate social groups: Alternatives, Main Streeters, and Regulars. These categories are not based on race or ethnic origins. Rather, social distinctions in Viroqua are based ultimately on residents' ideas about what a community is and why it matters.

These ideas both reflect and shape their choices as consumers, whether at the grocery store, as parents of school-age children, or in the voting booth. Living with-and listening to-the town's residents taught Macgregor that while traditional ideas about "community," especially as it was connected with living in a small town, still provided an important organizing logic for peoples' lives, there were a variety of ways to understand and create community.

A fun book that sees Viroqua through the eyes of the outsider.

Having grown up in Viroqua, I could relate to this book. I know many of the people mentioned in the book. I visit Viroqua frequently and can see the changes over the years and can feel the conflicts between the new comers and the residents that have been there for many years. A fascinating read. I have recommended it to many. I loved her comment that she names the names of all the people in the book as she did not want everyone trying to guess who she was writing about.

About the Author
Clive Oxenden trained to teach EFL at International House, London, and later took his RSA (Cert) at Bromley College, Kent. He has taught English and trained teachers for 23 years, mainly in Spain but also in Turkey, Kuwait, Algeria, and the UK, where he was the RSA tutor at Padworth College in Berkshire. He has spent the last fifteen years teaching at the British Council, Valencia. Christina Latham-Koenig started her career in TEFL in 1976, teaching at International House and later at the British Council, both in Spain (Valencia) and in the UK. She got a distinction in the RSA Diploma in 1987, and then became a local supervisor for this course in Spain. She has worked as a teacher trainer for both native and non-native teachers of English. She now lives in Valencia, and she started collaborating as co-author of the English File series in 1995.

About the Author
Robin Brown has published 14 books across a range of genres – natural history, biography, fiction and history – mostly with African themes. He also created, produced, directed and wrote Nature Watch, ITV’s most successful natural history series, consisting of 68 programmes, all in the British top 20. He has produced some 50 specials for the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery, including ManEaters of Tsavo (with David Attenborough) and the award-winning In the Company of Whales. His first novel, When the Woods became the Trees, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, and his book Marco Polo: The Incredible Journey has been sold to five countries and is presently the primer on the subject in Brazilian schools. Robin is an experienced speaker and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, where he lectures regularly on books and films with conservation themes.

A fascinating book about an attempt by one of the late 19th Century's titans to influence world events. This is not an easy read, but well worth persevering with.

History brought to life by a Englishman of statue.

History as written here is exciting because we are intimately linked to people, events and places.
Names of people we have some awareness of, a road or suburb or town associated with them or events we are familiar with and linked to persons we have read about in other contexts, all come together in this history. That C J Rhodes associated with or had contact with writers across the spectrum; books we've read both as youngsters and adults, and the deep influence he had on development here in SA, in places like Kimberley, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Rhodesia, where we have lived or visited or been schooled. I have retired to Modderfontein where the dynamite factory was established for the gold mines, possibly with Rhodes' influence, brings it even closer to my life and memories, along with many millions of other South Africans
