I read a couple chapters on my birthday—no regrets!

Like all my reviews, I'll preface by saying this is not a professional review by any means, but represents my own biased, subjective opinions.

I saw this on the shelf at by library randomly and it looked interesting. It's not a biography of Labov per se, sort of an overview of him and his work. This book was great. As a grad student in linguistics, I'm familiar with several things that Labov has done, but there was so much more that I didn't even realize was his. Things like hypercorrection and the observer's effect, which I feel like aren't even linguisticky terms. It's pretty amazing how much of his work touches every aspect of linguistics.

What I like about the beginning of the book was that it set the stage for what the field of linguistics was like before Labov came along. Dialectology was a thing, but variation was seen as a thing to overcome rather than something to study.

The following are my notes I took as I read along the book. Again, brief, biased summaries:

•�Chapter 1: The Challenges of Labov—I read this but didn't take notes. Sorry.
•�Chapter 2: Linguistics and sociolinguistics before Labov—If nothing else, this was a great a chapter on the history of sociolinguistics. It covers everything that's happened since the 1800s and leads it up to the 1960s and the problems that researchers were facing. There were methodological problems, and just conceptual things that weren't brought to light back then, which this chapter highlighted.
•�Chapter 3: How to establish a field as a graduate student—This was a summary of the Martha's Vineyard study and the New York study, with commentary along the way of how the methodology was new. Apparently, Labov came up with the convention of using parentheses for sociolinguistic variables, slashes for phonemes, and brackets for phonetic realizations. He also came up with the idea of hypercorrection, based on his New York study. Also, there's a lot more to the study in New York than just the Fourth Floor part. And it was interesting to read.
•�Chapter 4: A Variationist approach to language—Covered broadly what variationist sociolinguistics is.
•�Chapter 5: Speech Styles and Discourse—This talked a lot about the sociolinguistic interview and why it was used to much to elicit informal speech. There have been criticisms though, and they are explained, with defense.
•�Chapter 6: The "socio" of sociolinguistics—Talked about the key sociolinguistic variables that Labov and others have used, the problems with quantifying them, and general conclusions that have been made from Labov's work. Talked specifically about social class, gender, and ethnicity.
•�Chapter 7: Labov as a historical linguist—This chapter talked about tracking sound changes over time and how Labov did it. It talks about push and pull chains and in general change across time.
•�Chapter 8: African American English—This chapter was all about AAVE and what Labov has done with it. It gave some pretty racist pre-Labovian quotes from back in the day, and then some better ones that Labov did. It also told the story of Ann Arbor and Oakland, which was good to read. It ended with the fact that things are better generally today, but not that much better.
•�Chapter 9: 50 years—Gave an overview of what the field of sociolinguistics looks like today. Talked about sociophonetics, corpus linguistics, and Eckert's waves. While not all fields of linguistics care about social factors (theoretical linguistics, for example), compared to 50 years ago, pretty much every one else is forced to acknowledge social factors in language now.

I'd recommend this book to any student of linguistics, and especially if they are interested in sociolinguistics or a similar subdiscipline. I thought it was great

Seeing Stars

This is a great intro book to a very complex subject. I've read a few others on how astrology influences events on Earth, and each book adds something new. As an updated version of a book previously published, it is interesting to see how her predictions came to fruition. It will be even more interesting to see how what she predicts for the next 10 years comes to pass.

The author not only discusses how planetary positions within the zodiac signs affect wars, conflicts and financial markets, but also shows how sun spot activity and eclipses have an influence.

I would have given the book 5 stars if she had shown charts of the planetary configurations to illustrate the predictions. The book is very easy to read, even for anyone without any previous knowledge of astrology.

Interesting Subject

By an astonishingly interesting writer. I have taken some courses from Christeen Skinner where I have always been impressed by her knowledge. I don't know a lot about astrology, but Christeen does, and she has the knack of passing on her knowledge. Financial astrology is extremely interesting and Christeen knows her subject. I have not finished the book; not the type of book you want to rush through....but I have gained a lot of knowledge.

Superb analysis

Fischer presents a detailed and trenchant look at the problems of historical explanation in this fine book. It is certainly one of the best history books I've ever read, although it's not a history book per se, since it's really a critique of the different explanations historians use. Fischer discusses probably about a hundred or more of these, so you probably won't be able to remember them all, but if nothing else, you'll be more alert to the more common and egregious types of historical errors, and overall, the book is a useful analysis and reminder of the problems and difficulties of writing history. In that regard, it's still a very interesting and worthwhile book.
Some of the fallacies I already knew from philosophy, such as the pathetic fallacy, the fallacy of composition, the post hoc fallacy, and so on, which are already well known. But then there are plenty of others with more abstruse names, such as the "the fallacy of the hypostatized proof." My one complaint enters here, since Fischer would have benefited from a knowledge of logic and philosophy, since he sometimes gives names to fallacies that are well known in logic and philosophy by a different name.
But overall, this is one of the best books on the methods and philosophy of history I've read, and it should probably be required reading for every student of history and professional historian alike.

An Indispensable Book for the Serious Writer

I've read this book cover to cover once and dipped into it on average once a month over the ten years since I first found it. It sits on my shelf with my other "correctives", such as Orwell's "Politics and the English Language". Fischer makes the same points about rhetoric as Orwell at greater length and with far more wit. But, Orwell is the better writer.
Yes, as one reviewer says, Fischer rants a bit, but amusingly and with dead-on quotations from his victims. One will think twice about the errors Fischer cites, if for no other reason than to avoid Fischer's next edition.
Fischer is quite even handed. The first felon he cites was a professor of mine -- and Fischer's -- as an undergraduate. A more generous critic and historian -- and human being -- one won't find. But there he is.
I cannot think of a better gift for anyone who takes persuasive prose seriously. No writer should be without it.

A Critical Analysis

David Hackett Fischer's thesis is that there is a tacit and analyzable logic of historical thought and that historians can improve their historical thinking by applying this logic to their work. Historians' Fallacies is a successful attempt to make history a discipline better governed by reason. Fischer notes that history is mainly a problem-solving discipline; the historian asks pertinent questions and then develops a logical paradigm to answer them. He acknowledges that history will never be an exact science but it is his goal, by a careful examination of common historical fallacies, to develop a type of logic. Method is necessary in history, and logic makes a method more rigorous and useful. The historian must follow rules to write good, "scientific," history.
Fischer reveals his ultimate goal in his conclusion. He discusses the goals of history and makes an eloquent apology for the historian. He astutely notes that social scientists have never found a justification for history, making illogical arguments to justify their interest in the past. Calling history "fun," saying that history should be studied because it "is there," and stating "everyone needs to know facts" are three poor reasons for a defense of history. Likewise, claiming history provides a creative outlet and that it could prove useful for the future are spurious speculations, at best.
Fischer's apology of history explains that as history becomes more logical, it becomes more useful to society. History can clarify the contexts of contemporary social problems and can help with forecasting, allowing us to discuss future issues before they arrive. History offers theoretical knowledge, helping social scientists understand past conditions that best brought, say, stability and peace. A recognition of these conditions could help calm today's times. History helps people understand who they are, and by giving them an identity, frees them from the tyranny of the short-sighted present. Most importantly, history helps people conceptualize today's problems in today's terms. Effective solutions to problems in the past could well prove disastrous if applied to similar problems today, and an understanding of history lessens this threat. Logical history is necessary to useful history; the two are inseparable.
Fischer's self-proclaimed reason for writing this book was the lack of logical analysis in history. He believes that many historians hold a bizarre hatred towards logic, known as "misology." Despite this anti-intellectual attitude by historians, the use of history as an academic discipline and a social science demands a logical and scientific approach. The analytical philosophy of history is helpful for developing historical thought, but insufficient to actually create the logic that historians need. Fischer takes that next step in his book.
Fischer explains his thesis by taking the reader through the three major steps of a historian's method: inquiry, explanation, and argument. Inquiry begins every legitimate historical endeavor. Thus, the historian must seek to ask questions in the right way, while carefully verifying significant facts. The field of explanation consists of generalizations, narration, causation, motivation, composition, and false analogy. Finally, within the field of argument, there are fallacies of semantical distortion and fallacies of substantive distraction. In each category he discusses various fallacies, often in great detail. His book discusses over one hundred different logical fallacies, and he does not discriminate among giving specific examples from a vast variety of works. These specific examples make logical ideas that seem abstract at first easy to understand. At the end of each chapter, Fischer follows the logical messes by a clean-up attempt where he briefly writes suggestions towards methods that are more logical than those of the historians he has attacked.
A narrow thesis binds the book together, but history is not lacking in poor historians, so the examples come from all of Western history, keeping the reader involved. Fischer's prose is crisp and he tends to throw in delightful phrases to keep the tone light, such as, "a rathole of metaphysical speculation," or a "literary monstrosity." His use of specific and amusing examples prevent the vast number of logical terms from becoming tedious. No holds are barred: Fischer holds high standards for the historian-and rightly so, judging from his presuppositions-and he expects history to be logical and done in a correct manner. This book probably made him few friends, for he attacks contemporaries in his field with the same vigor that he attacks the virulent racist of ages past.
Fisher's major contribution, however, does not come from his deconstruction of others' historical analyses, though this is the majority of the book. At the end of each chapter, he includes concise summaries that offer advice to the historian wanting to avoid the previous logical fallacies. His deconstruction is vital to actually view bad history in progress. But his constructive suggestions are excellent for those who would write good history. His summaries are excellent in understanding exactly what he wants from a logical historical thought. Historians who consciously use his positive suggestions, while avoiding the logical fallacies he mentions will find themselves on the right track to creating works with significance. A sound and logical structure is necessary is history. Too many problems occurred in the past because of a misconstrued construction of previous events, and Fischer takes a giant step towards limiting the same mistakes.

Great text...

Excellent overview of the history of the English language. It is, however, an anthology of essays about the topic, not a textbook, so does not have built-in helps for learning the phonetic alphabet or for learning elements of middle English. It's not an equivalent to Baugh and Cable, but does represent the latest scholarship on the history of the English language. Its only real defect is a lack of focused discussion on the development of American English.

Interesting Read!

I'll admit, there are more "scholarly" books on the history of English. However, I think that one of the strengths of this book is that it provides an excellent overview of the history of the English language while remaining accessible to readers without a strong background in linguistics. I certainly learned quite a bit reading this book and I felt that it helped give me a solid overview of the history of English. While the scope of the book is admittedly broad (dare I say huge!) the book provides enough info that if you are interested in a specific aspect of English that you will most likely read about it in this book and then you can purchase more detailed books that focus on the specific time/place/location that you are interested. Thus, this book is an excellent starting point!

About the Author
Stephen Knapp grew up in a Christian family, during which time he seriously studied the Bible to understand its teachings. In his late teenage years, however, he sought answers to questions not easily explained in Christian theology. So he began to search through other religions and philosophies from around the world and started to find answers for which he was looking. He also studied a variety of ancient mythologies, mysticism, yoga, and the spiritual teachings of the East. After his first reading of the Bhagavad-gita, he felt he had found the last piece of the puzzle he had been putting together through all of his research. Therefore, he continued to study all of the major Vedic texts of India to gain a better understanding of the Vedic science.

It is known amongst all Eastern mystics that anyone, regardless of qualifications, academic or otherwise, who does not engage in the spiritual practices described in the Vedic texts, cannot actually enter into understanding the depths of the Vedic spiritual science, nor acquire the realizations that should accompany it. So, rather than pursuing his research in an academic atmosphere at a university, Stephen directly engaged in the spiritual disciplines that have been recommended for hundreds of years. He continued his study of Vedic knowledge and spiritual practice under the guidance of a spiritual master. Through this process, and with the sanction of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, he became initiated into the genuine and authorized spiritual line of the Brahma-Madhava-Gaudiya sampradaya, which is a disciplic succession that descends back through Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Vyasadeva, the compiler of Vedic literature, and further back to Sri Krishna. Besides being brahminically initiated, Stephen has also been to India several times and traveled extensively throughout the country, visiting most of the major holy places and gaining a wide variety of spiritual experiences that only such places can give.

Stephen has been writing "The Eastern Answers to the Mysteries of Life" series, which so far includes "The Secret Teachings of the Vedas," "The Universal Path to Enlightenment," "The Vedic Prophecies: A New Look into the Future," and now "How the Universe was Created and Our Purpose In It." Other books he has written include "Toward World Peace: Seeing the Unity Between Us All," and "Facing Death: Welcoming the Afterlife," as well as "Proof of Vedic Culture's Global Existence." Summary of philosophy that explains the creation of universe

The purpose of this book and many of his other books written by Stephen Knapp is to identify our constitutional position as a pure spiritual soul that is superior to material nature. Recognizing our eternal place and working towards to get back there is the esssence and purpose why this universe is created to discipline the rebellious souls. Stephen brings this point forth with clarity out of innumerable references from many scriptures. With his practical experience in practicing bhakti yoga over years helps giving useful practical hints for the souls that are interested in putting this material into use. Like his other works, the content of this book can be best appreciated only when one has open mind and thinks beyond the perception of material senses.

Congratulations to the author

My congratulations to the author for a well thought out and meticulously researched book. Stephen does what he says he will do, which is to present the Vedic version and all its details of how the world was created. I have read a little about the Vedic description of the universal creation in the Rig Veda and Upanishads. Though it has always intrigued me, it is not a topic that is easy to understand. The author has done a commendable job in putting it all together in a format that's much easier to grasp and follow. This Eastern tradition always had much more information about the creation process than any other culture or spiritual tradition, and is worth looking at. So I especially appreciate the many dozens of quotes or references from the ancient Vedic books and Puranas that the author uses to illustrate the lofty concepts that they contain. Anyone interested in Eastern thought or alternative spiritual views will appreciate this book and the endeavor that was put into it.
