Relativistic Rhinos!

I recently relived my freshman year at Rice by buying several introductions to Special Relativity from Amazon. When I want to learn something, I usually buy several books on the same subject and read them all at the same time. Back then, of course, I checked them out of the library. Out of the books I just read, I like this one by Helliwell the most. The book by Bondi was an enjoyable read that took half a day. If I were going to teach the subject to a complete beginner, I might start with Bondi's book. I may even reread it for his historical information and perspective. If I needed to pass an exam, I think I would work through the book by James H. Smith. It is very much the distilled essence of basic Special Relativity. The presentation is the elegant product of decades of experience. However, it is still basic, and does not get much into four-dimensional formulations and never mentions calculus. Although I called it the distilled essence, I don't mean to imply that it skips steps. It is very thorough, and it is the one I would study carefully to ace an exam.

Nevertheless, I think the Helliwell book is my favorite. Ya gotta love a book with relativistic rhinoceroses in it! That's right, those two rhinos that you see on the Amazon picture are travelling towards each other at .99C each. Does that mean their relative velocity is 1.98C? You'll have to read the book to find out.

This book covers all the standard material of Special Relativity, but also has things that other books don't have. For example, he covers the Fizeau experiment decades before the Michelson-Morley experiment. Personally, I am fascinated by the attempts of the 19th century geniuses to figure out what the heck light is and what it is doing. Every book covers the twin paradox, and sometimes the pole vaulter paradox, but Helliwell also does the mind-blowing "paradox" of the rotating solid object. When a block is moving towards us at relativistic speed it appears rotated, but not distorted (what happened to the contraction?), and at some point we see the back of the block, even though it hasn't passed us yet. Too bad he didn't analyze the rhinoceroses that way.

I find his derivation of relativistic momentum and energy to be the best, for example, Chapter 8. He approaches all of the secondary consequences of Special Relativity the way someone with good intuition about physics and a little bit of math skill might figure them out for the first time. That goes also for his explanations of forces and electromagnetism.

I have to take a 6 hour plane flight soon. Out of all these short books I purchased recently on Special Relativity, the one I'm planning to take on board with me is the Helliwell book.

While following Luau into the local graveyard, the two friends find a flyer from a boy in their school asking that his cat be returned. As they investigate, Alex's mom, a local police detective, finds that more and more felines are disappearing, and some witnesses think maybe a ghost is responsible. Legend has it that the Harvey house is haunted because of a murder in 1879. The story unfolds to a satisfying resolution to both mysteries. Characters are well drawn, and the book will entice even reluctant readers with its action and humor. Now, it's Halloween that goes missing--Halloween being a neighbor's cat. Freeman offers a solid mix of misunderstandings, mischief, and mystery as the kids track not only Halloween but also other cats that have been catnapped--some say by a ghost. Is their disappearance linked to two murders that happened in the town more than 100 years ago? A cat was at the center of that mystery, too. There's a lot of super sleuthing here; even Alex's cat, Luau, gets in on the action. By setting the story at Halloween, Freeman is able to use the high jinks of the holiday as the detecting goes on. The explanation of the mystery of the missing cats doesn't quite hold together; but the resolution of long-ago killings is quite gripping (in the name of decorum, the book calls the murdered woman's paramoursweetheart throughout). With kids always hungry for mysteries, this is a good one to have on the shelf. Ilene Cooper

Too twisted/gory for the elementary crowd

I picked this up at the library for a Halloween read aloud for my 1st grade daughter. I thought this might be a fun one to read during Halloween. Boy was I wrong. It sounded innocent enough...a cat named Halloween goes missing and two kids try to find him. Well in the end there is a capnapper stealing cats because she is shaving them and using the fur for over the counter homeopathic medicine for eye sight because (isn't it obvious?) cats have good eyesight. Talk about a FUR BALL! When they show up at the catnapper's home to catch her red-handed all of the cats are shaved bald wearing little rainbow sweaters. (Bizarre!) And on top of that at first the kids think the catnappings are related to an old neighborhood ghost tale (we don't find out about the details until we read the book). A woman has an affair. Her husband kills her. A few days later her husband's bloody dead body is found with the family cat sitting there licking its bloody paws. The cat did it as an act of revenge! Well not really. It was the husband who did it. He destroyed the boyfriend's body during the murder so badly that he wasn't identified correctly. The husband switched clothes with the dead body and burned the boyfriends clothes in the fireplace that has since been remodeled over. So the husband got away with two murders. Are you kidding me? An elementary grade mystery? UGH! We like mysteries and suspense (The 39 Clues, The Benedict Society, Sisters Grimm, The Magic Thief) but this was taking it a bit too far for an elementary read.

My review is that it was the best book I have read so far... it could have made a little more sense at the beginning. The characters were unique and full of personality. I loved it.

Beauty and the Beast

This is another of Martin McDonagh's black comedies in his growing canon in the theater of malice and cruelty. He'll soon corner the market on the make `em laugh, then shock `em Irish village genre. Here a mother and daughter exist together in am atmosphere of mutual hatred. The mother Mag is a harpy, a harridan, lazy, spiteful, self-centered, and malicious. Her daughter Maureen, frustrated, unstable and equally malicious, is shackled with her. A local man Pato Dooley, headed for the States, dubs forty-year-old Maureen the beauty queen of Leenane which is their tiny Irish village in Connemara.
McDonagh's characters often start with verbal nastiness and graduate to physical cruelty with torture, blood and gore. He's carved out a niche for himself that can cause his audiences to cringe and cower at the lengths he'll go to finish off a character or two. There may be bloody consequences. A McDonagh character must learn to duck to fend off violence and nastiness. Herein beware of hot cooking oil and heavy pokers.
His characters often seem like simpletons teetering on the edge of insanity who speak at times in an absurdist nonsensical dialogue. The playwright see saws his audience between seemingly harmless comic absurdity and dark cruelty and sadism. In his theater of savagery human life is negotiable and precarious, and often valueless.
He's an original, edgy creative talent who may turn off the queasy and those easily shocked, but he is a force in the theater to be reckoned with. Making his audiences uncomfortable, making them wriggle in their seats may well be his goal. In this play expect less blood and gore than in "The Lieutenant of Inishmore," but don't expect much compassion for the human race. Sickly brilliant, perhaps?

As Good as Behane

I'm a big fan of Martin McDonagh's movies (IN BRUGES, SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS), but didn't realize he was a playwright until someone pointed me to this book. After reading it, I'm now just as big a fan of his plays as I am of his films. The three plays featured in TBQOL are interconnected and focus on the locals in the titular town. What appear on the surface to be funny slices of life turn out to be a whole lot more and, as he does in his movies, McDonagh steers the comedy into dark, violent territory. I loved each one of these plays equally and will certainly be seeking out more of his work, whatever the medium.

About the Author
Dr Steve Peters is a Consultant Psychiatrist and has worked in the clinical field of psychiatry for over 20 years. He specialises in optimising the functioning of the mind and also holds degrees in mathematics and medicine. Dr Peters is Undergraduate Dean at Sheffield University Medical School and resident psychiatrist with the British Cycling and Sky ProCycling teams. The scientific explanation for mind vs heart situations

There are two phrases, among others, that I like to live by. The first is "if you don't like something change it, if you can't change it change your attitude towards it." And the second one is "you can't control how you feel, but you can control how you react to it." These two phrases have Chimp Paradox written all over it, and this book is pretty much the great elaboration of the phrases.

Derive his fact-based theories from neurological researches and decades of experience, Prof Steve Peters analyses the mechanism of the brain between the Frontal (the logical Human), the Limbic (the emotional Chimp) and Parietal (the memory-storing Computer), and how different functions of these 3 can conflict and/or complement each others to produce our thinking process and decision making process.

Surprisingly, for such a complex subject matter this book is really a light reading, which is written in a simple and concise way using easy to digest symbols, diagrams and bullet points. But yet, when I tried to read more on neuobiology as a follow up, I can somehow keep up with the complicated and serious stuff thanks to the understanding from this book.

It is by far the book that I highlighted the most, with every single line seems to be important, and it is so psychologically spot on that it feels like it is tailored on the conflicts between my own Human and Chimp. It also gives me huge understanding on how to differentiate between the Human and the Chimp in people around me (and how to engage to them accordingly), and it even has given me a clear and simple solutions to some of my, my family's, and friends' real problems. 5 stars!

Foundation of life book, a must read for the entire human population

First heard of this book while watching the 2011 Tour de France, as the British cycling team continued to outperform their rivals, partly due to their application of the principles of this book. Each chapter develops parts of the framework of our mind and gives easy to remember insights into how our each part works - for us - and against us - if not managed properly. There are constant flow of "ah-ha" insights for my life, and I am happier, healthier and more productive. I have given out 35 of these books to family, friends and co-workers. This should be taught in schools from pre-K through college, and I'm hoping for a YouTube webinar of the highlights.

The Chimp Paradox gives great insight into the 'chimp' and 'human' living inside each of us. It really helps the reader understand why we sometimes make the choices we do (even though we don't want to!). This knowledge may help the reader to make provision for those times and therefore help you make better choices. If you know how the 'chimp' operates and how you can help the 'human' get control without neglecting the 'chimp', you're bound to be less impulsive and reactive.

This is a great read for anybody in business, but also for those interested in self-development and being more in control of their lives.

What happened!?!?!?

I read the first two books of this series and was so excited about this one I stayed up late and read the whole book. I agree with a previous reviewer it should have been two books! There was not enough time spent developing the relationships between the couples nor the relationship between the individuals and God. Which is sad because in the previous books the authoress took such care to establish emotions, situations and relationships that you couldn't help but feel what the characters where feeling. Not so much in the book.

My other problem was the tragedy! There was so much it really became ridiculous. It really felt like a soap opera. I liked that in the previous books it was about overcoming the main tragedy at the beginning of the first book.

Well I wish the series had ended with a better (two) book(s), but this how it goes sometimes. Authors in general should stick with the same successful formula that they are have already established for the series. Readers like that! Loved the first two books!

Two years ago, Jolene Yoder and her friends planned a visit to Hershey Park. In a blink of an eye, their plans changed when the vehicle they were riding in left the road and crashed. Jolene lost her hearing and was unable to keep her teaching position; she left to go live with her Aunt and Uncle to come to terms with her new silent world.

A message from her mother asks her to come back to her Amish hometown of Topeka, Indiana. She learns that two deaf children have moved to her hometown and are in need of her help in order to attend the local school. Jolene is reluctant to accept because it would mean she would go back home and see her friends, knowing that she would not be able to hear their voices. In Jolene's heart she has always known teaching was her true calling.

Lonnie Hershberger and his family moved from Illinois to Indiana. He is heartbroken that he had to leave behind his girlfriend Carolyn. When he invites her to visit him in Indiana and she doesn't come, he realizes that he must put his love for her behind him and move on with his new life in Indiana.

When Lonnie meets Jolene he feels an immediately immediate attraction to her. He wonders if God has put him in Indiana in order to see the woman that was meant to be with him. Will Jolene return Lonnie's feelings? Or is there someone else who has an interest in claiming Jolene's heart?

A COUSIN'S CHALLENGE is the third and final installment of Wanda E. Brunstetter's Indiana Cousins series. It has been a long time since I have been so impressed by a series. Wanda E. Brunstetter's talented pen has created memorable characters that are truly unforgettable. I have high hopes that one day the Hallmark channel turns the Indiana Cousins series into a Hallmark movie; I would love to sitback and actually be able to see this series on a live screen.

A Must for Every Student in the Nursing Field

Last semester, I used Fundamental Success, which helped tremendously. I went from "C" to "A". Therefore, I decided to buy this other one. Given that the nursing program is very intense, it can be very difficult to read through all the materials. "Med -Surg Success" covers the entire chapters in the form of NClex questions. It is better than the text bank. The author of the book gives a rationale for every question, even the wrong ones. At the end of every chapter, there is an exam style questionnaire! I noticed that if you can answer the majority of those questions correctly, it will not only give you a better understanding of the topic, but YOU WILL PASS THE TEST in your class. I realized that there are always quite a few questions (or similar) from this book that comes to the exam.
Honestly, if you can only afford one extra book from your text book, this will be the one to take. I hope that it will be helpful to others as it is for me.

The questions with the rationales is awesome. I have seen questions on my tests from the rationales also!! I recommend the book to anyone who may struggling in med-surg. My last test was higher and I believe the book had a great deal to do with my success.
