Great book to learn about TDD and how to make the best out of it.

This book provides an excellent learning artifact and reference to the Test-Driven Development practice. Even if you have already used TDD in your software projects or continue to use it, you will benefit a lot of reading this book, because it will show you how to take the most out of using TDD with Python's unittest built-in module in a simple software application to follow. The book is also very easy and accessible to read. It makes the reader acknowledge all the power of TDD and the tools the author uses to extend the TDD practice is a value asset to use on any software project.

Why this is a great book to me:

- The TDD approach is carefully explained and the importance of using it in our software projects;
- The software application the author uses as an example on how to use TDD is simple to understand, and it is a real world software application, not an abstract example; We go carefully into every module of this application while improving our application with TDD;
- This book covers Refactoring Patterns and Anti-Patterns and how to avoid recurrent Code Smells;
- Explains how to use Mock Objects to test interactions between multiple objects;
- Tells us how to deal with legacy code which have no tests. This is a must-read chapter!
- Shows us how to maintain our test suite with docstrings, custom test class hierarchies, fixtures, helper methods, custom assert matches, equality functions and matchers to make our code more readable;
- Covers executable documentation with Python's doctest module, on methods, classes, modules and packages;
- Shows us how to extend Python's unittest with nose2, a powerful third-party tool and plugin suite;
- Covers Unit Test Patterns, from Mocking Patterns, Spies, Generator functions, to Mocking with Mutable Arguments;
- A rich set of powerful tools is gathered in this book: from third-party tools and Python's built-in modules, build tools, packaging tools, continuous integration tools, documentation tools and current TDD IDE integration;
- Python 3.4 throughout this book, although the author has compiled an annex on how to use the code samples in Python 2.6 as well.

Overall, this is a great book to read and to use in every software development process. After reading this book I can't think of any reason why any software projects shouldn't have tests anymore, and shouldn't be continuous integrated as well. This book shows exactly how to achieve the best out of the TDD approach with the current tools in Python 3. It's well worth a read and to have at hand, no doubt.

Good info, could use some revisions

I was really excited to review this book. I've already read the Django TDD book by Henry Percival and covered the Testing Python book by David Sale, they were both really informative and covered TDD principles and tools in a manner I found clear and easy to understand. That being said, this book started to lose me around the 3rd chapter. Here's my analysis:

Pros:
-The author covers a lot of really good topics related to TDD. Code smells, refactoring, how to address a pre-existing code base that you're walking into for the first time were all topics I found to be really helpful.
-The book challenged me to learn about Python topics that I had not previously known about. I wasn't sure how @classmethod worked or what the setUpClass method did in unittesting, but I certainly looked them up when the book presented them to me and was sure to fully understand them before proceeding.
-The code coverage is available on GitHub, which is always great, so you can follow along easily.

Cons:
-I felt like the organization of the book started to slack around the 2nd chapter in Exploring the Rule classes. The whole point of TDD is for the programmer to write the tests first and the implementation code 2nd. We make the tests fail, we write code until it passes, we move on. Then we refactor. Great. Why, in the 2nd chapter, are we then presented with implementation code (no tests), then a discussion of TDD principles, followed by "here's the tests and they should pass".
-Further to this point, it started to get difficult to read in chapter 3 which begins discussion of a new functionality, dual crossover moving average. Immediately, we get the implementation code (again, no tests) followed by a discussion about renaming variable and renaming method refactoring methods, both of which involve running the tests first to make sure they pass. When it comes time to implement this code, the author simply says "the tests are in the exercise section". So I'm supposed to read up to that point, then skip to the end to check out the exercises and get the tests, then go back and continue working on the code base? Furthermore, I am looking at the exercises as I type this and there is no presentation of those tests whatsoever.
-Finally, while the book does cover some good topics, there are times when it gets a little off topic (I guess). For instance, in the section regarding commenting styles, we begin discussion about how to properly write comments (of course). However, rather than applying this to the current code base and application we are working on, the author gives an example of determining if people are old enough to receive a senior citizen discount. I know this is a simple example, but why switch gears when we could have easily applied this to what was being worked on (there was a presentation of a very poorly written method at the beginning of the chapter).

All in all, I wouldn't say this was a poor book, I've read some O'Reilly work that could make you want to quit programming altogether, but I do think there could be some effective revisions to make it easier to read and understand. I have a lot of respect for authors who decide to take on TDD as it is a discipline and requires constant effort and attention. That being said, I would recommend this book to review the principles and topics discussed, but not necessarily to follow along in a step by step manner.

Great introduction and in-depth explanation of Testing in Python.

Cons:
- Kindle format text is WAY too big (at least on my device) - they're looking into getting this fixed if they can
- Packt Publishing didn't do the best job with editing. There are quite a few (not a LOT, but enough to be a bit annoying) mistakes of all kinds. Missing words, code mistakes, typos, etc.
- A TDD book that only starts off showing TDD, then mostly doesn't show tests until after showing the code.

Pros:
+ Great at introducing TDD and unit testing in python, then really digging into the more advanced stuff.
+ First thing I've found that explains Python's built-in mocking framework very well.
+ Doesn't repeat too much and doesn't move too quickly

Note: Only 3 or 4 (out of 10) chapters are truly about TDD as opposed to just unit testing. It's up to you whether this is good or bad.

Interesting but dark. Never actually describing the eruption at Yellowstone was a good choice. Each story was personal and didn't dip into the science fiction/techno-thriller genre. Some of the stories were predictable and others were incomplete. All things considered I would recommend this book.

Very enjoyable

"Land of Ash" is an anthology of short stories by David Dalglish, David McAfee, Daniel Arenson, John Fitch V, Michael Crane, and Robert Duperre. The premise is simple: The Yellowstone Caldera erupts, covering the world in ash, and that's the unifying theme between the eleven different stories. It's all about survivors, and how they deal with total devastation in a land covered in ash.

I read Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King a few weeks back, and I like Land of Ash better. Not that I didn't like Full Dark, No Stars - because I really did. King is a master of the underrated medium of short stories and novellas. But I still enjoy Land of Ash more.

My favorite is "Shelter" by David Dalglish. It's about a father and his small child holing themselves up in the house after the ash comes. There's something so simple and bittersweet about it that's perfect.

That's not to say there's any bad stories in it - "Beach Puppies" is somewhat lighter than most of the other stories, and "Last Words" brings it down to a more personal level and less apocalyptic, if that makes sense

Strong Concept, Slick Writing, but doesn't pay off

The notion of an anthology of short stories, modeled after THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES, by different writers is a damn good one... and David Dalglish has certainly created a compelling springboard with a lot of potential that, unfortunately, isn't quite met. That said, there's a lot to like about this collection, particularly from Dalglish himself. Dalglish's voice is strong, assured, and compelling and there are lot of powerful images and sharply drawn characters (the descriptions of the Rio Grande in "A Harmless American" will stick with you long after you've finished the book). He sets the bar high with his opening story, but also a template that subsequent writers followed far too closely. His stories, and those by David McAfee and Daniel Arenson, are by far the strongest and most tonally consistent in voice and vision, but too many of them are simply vignettes about people awaiting their deaths rather than tales with any sort of beginning, middle and end...or complexity. That's also a problem with the collection as a whole. It's a shame there wasn't a larger, loose arc to the stories instead of just a collection of standalone character vignettes. There was nothing unifying them into a more satisfying, narrative whole. I wanted to feel like I was heading towards something...instead the collection just sort of petered out. But there's still much to enjoy in this collection and a chance to sample the work of some really terrific writers.

After being called the "greatest poet of the Western saga," film director Ford responded, "I am not a poet, and I don't know what a Western saga is. I would say that is bullshit." Yet Ford--who made such classic westerns as Stagecoach, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance--helped define the idea of the western as a quintessential American story for audiences around the world. This first full-length critical biography presents a complex, fascinating portrait of a troubled and conflicted artist and man. Born John Feeney, he was an Irish outsider in Yankee New England. He began working in the film industry in 1914 as a studio ditch digger, but was soon acting in films and, a few years later, directing them. By the early 1930s, he had achieved considerable artistic and commercial fame with The Informer. McBride (Frank Capra) elegantly and cogently weaves Ford's personal life into the fabric of his career. He is at his best describing how Ford's political sentiments emerged in his work (especially the antiracism of Steamboat Round the Bend and The Searchers) as well as the director's move from liberal to conservative politics during Hollywood's red-baiting years and the HUAC hearings. He gives an equally astute delineation of Ford's emotional life--a tempestuous marriage, a possible affair with Katharine Hepburn, his reputation as a tough guy and his alcoholism. Drawing upon a wealth of critical material plus more than 125 interviews with Ford's colleagues, family and friends, McBride has produced a fine, long-needed biography of a pivotal American artist.

"My name's John Ford. I make Westerns." Ford preferred to let his work speak for itself, and his abrasive encounters with film scholars have become legendary. In fact, "Pappy" Ford, who fancied himself a journeyman director, would probably have been perplexed by these two recent additions to the rapidly growing library of Ford film criticism. Arriving hard on the heels of Scott Eyman's comprehensive Print the Legend: The Life and Times of John Ford (LJ 10/1/99), McBride's weighty tome, several decades in preparation, paints a similar portrait: Ford was an insecure alcoholic whose gruff, even sadistic treatment of family, friends, cast, and crew masked his sensitive, sentimental nature. Complex and contradictory like many of his films Ford was a man who stood up to McCarthyite blacklisters but later churned out crude propaganda in support of the Vietnam war. He celebrated tradition, family, and community but was a miserable failure as husband and father. As Eyman did, McBride (Frank Capra; Steven Spielberg) draws on exhaustive research and interviews, but he has the advantage of a few memorably brief meetings with the Great Man himself. Ford left an impressive if uneven body of work, and McBride does it justice, examining each film in illuminating detail. Still, although McBride's book is very deserving, public and academic libraries that cannot collect both biographies should stick to Eyman's more streamlined telling. Studlar (film and English, Univ. of Michigan) and Bernstein (film, Emory Univ.) take readers into academic territory, offering nine essays on the work plus a "dossier" of articles on the man and filmmaker. Robin Wood leads off with a classic critique, questioning whether Ford's late films measure up to his early work. Other essays discuss the role of women and religion in Ford's film universe, and the hotly disputed controversy about whether his last epic Cheyenne Autumn was a "mea culpa" for previous insensitive portrayals of the American Indian. Film director John Ford presents biographers a tough challenge. Colorful as his long life was, his contradictory personality, emotional reticence, and intransigence with interviewers make it unlikely that anyone will ever limn a definitive portrait of him. McBride is better qualified, however, than most of the others who have tried. He coauthored one of the first significant books on Ford in 1974 and has spent 30 years researching this one. He resists other writers' tendency to treat Ford's life and works separately, instead showing, for example, how Ford's frequent themes of family and assimilation reflect his sense of ethnic identity as the son of Irish immigrants. McBride mines the mountain of preceding Ford criticism deeply as he adds valuable insight into considerations of such classics as Stagecoach, The Searchers, and The Quiet Man. If McBride's Ford study doesn't disclose major new information or shed much new light, as his revelatory Frank Capra (1992) did, it is still a necessity for film studies collections and a good primary biography for others. A great biography of a great director

As a fan of the master filmmaker John Ford, I was enthralled to find this wonderful biography. It is both entertaining and scholarly, filled with fascinating anecdotes that provide the reader with an in-depth view of Ford's complex personality. In spanning Ford's life and career, this book also provides a panoramic overview of Hollywood itself and the dramatic changes it went through over the years, many of which are reflected in Ford's work. I really enjoyed the analyses of Ford's films which provide many new insights and perspectives. A must-read for anyone interested in film.

"Searchin' Way Out There"...

I don't know why anyone interested in the seminal American director, John Ford, would not find this book utterly fascinating. McBride illuminates Ford's early life and the beginnings of his long career with detailed care. He explores his problematic character with skill, compassion and insight without ever being patronizing and without ever holding back about the darkest aspects of Ford's personality and behavior. For instance, McBride makes it very clear that Ford does not deserve as much credit as he usually gets for what was really an ambivalent attitude toward the notorious Hollywood "blacklist" during the anti-communist hysteria of the 1940s and '50s.
McBride's book is packed with vivid anecdotes from associates, observers of Ford and members of the legendary "Stock Company" (Harry Carey, Jr.'s stories are really wonderful!), and his own critiques of the films are sophisticated and augmented by quotes and assessments by other major "Fordians." McBride is generous with his inclusion of other critics' views and when he disagrees he himself is never mean or dismissive. His illuminations of the significance of the post-WWII western, his accounts of the intricacies of the "blacklist" and his sympathetic understanding of Ford's last films and what they represented are especially valuable.
There may indeed be other biographies just as good as McBride's but this is a captivating, comprehensive and intellectual volume for the Ford aficionado. It is immensely satisfying!

A Monumental Job

This is a very good biography of Ford. Yes, McBride relies on Sarris and Carey Jr. a good bit of the time, yet this book remains very interesting and does a thorough job covering the many films Ford made.
Strengths of the book include an eye-opening look at Ford's WWII service, (How many other guys were at both Midway and D-Day and managed to get to Burma and Yugoslavia as well?) a clear presentation of Ford's relations with the different studios (the list of "better" titles for The Quiet Man the head of Republic tried to force on Ford is hysterically funny) and an evenhanded evaluation of Ford's behavior during the blacklist era.
Perhaps the evenhandedness of McBride's tone is what I liked the most about the book. One could take Ford's life and turn it into a straightforward case of hero-worship, or one could take an axe to him up and down the line, pointing out his failures in family life, his bigoted comments, his questionable actions in some controversial issues. McBride avoids falling into either extreme camp. We get Ford warts and all here, and it is left up to us to decide.
My only complaint is that the book is too short. I would have liked more discussion on a few films, and I would have liked a chapter on Ford's posthumous reputation. McBride raises the issue in his introduction that Ford is being forgotten by the new generation of writers and filmmakers, but he never quite tells why.
Still, this was a fine book, one that I read quickly despite its length.

Great book...one minor problem

This book is for those interested in a comprehensive, up to date volume on lipids, the metabolic syndrome, and the development of atherosclerosis. It is an excellent book, and I love having a Kindle version, it's so easy to wiki any unfamiliar terms.

I have one quibble...many of the figures have captions that are truncated. It seems that there is a maximum of one screenload of caption per figure, and some of the captions are much longer.

No instructions in the book- look on YouTube if you have no teacher. 12 songs= 1 year. Extensions/flats/sharps/2nd position/tone

Suzuki books are a great series and I was told they are meant to be taught by a teacher. There are virtually no instructions in this book! And I was also told each book is meant to last through a years worth of teaching. I believe there are 8 books in total? I went through book 1 and used YouTube online videos to learn how the songs sound. Some videos will show you how to play it as well so you should give it a try. I just got book 2 and it looks like a lot of challenges are ahead. There are 12 songs in the book. The book is suppose to be a full year so that would be about a month for each song... that may be a little long but they do seem challenging to me so I wouldn't mind spending that much time to learn one if needed. If you want the CD you will have to pay more, this does not come with one.

This is exactly what it says it is, the Suzuki method book, so if that's what you want, that's what you get, on nice, appropriately heavy paper in a well bound book that can last through several students.

This is how Audre Lorde introduces herself in a paper entitled "The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action." Audre Lorde takes personal responsibility for this essential, perpetual transformation. In Sister Outsider she enters into dialogue with listeners and readers, lending us her voice and challenging us to speak and act for ourselves. She insists that we pay attention, that we confront the limitations we set upon ourselves and each other; her words have weight and resonance because she listens as rigorously as she speaks. She asks and risks more of herself than might seem possible; the political is personal on many levels of her life. She writes about facing the threat of cancer, about being part of an interracial lesbian couple raising a son, about sex, poetry, rage, and restraint. About the Author
A writer, activist, and mother of two, Audre Lorde grew up in 1930s Harlem. She earned a master’s degree in library science from Columbia University, received a National Endowment for the Arts grant for poetry, and was New York State’s Poet Laureate from 1991 to 1993. She is the author of twelve books, including ZAMI and THE BLACK UNICORN. Lorde died of cancer at the age of fifty-eight in 1992.

Painful Light of Truth

This is much more than a book, a collection of writings. It's an experience more like surviving a traumatic event, seeing a deep and distressing movie or having a long and difficult talk with someone who has been oppressed from all sides. It accomplishes that which no other book I have ever read has done. Aside from the profound personal impact it has had on me, it details a horror story of a life lived with incomparable insight into humanity as well as with courage which faces that horror every day. I bought and read the book based on the other reviews above. They are all correct, but the praise this book deserves is understated. It may well be the greatest book of psychological insight and advice ever written. Only Dostoevsky's works compare. Lorde defies all the labels she and others use to describe her. This is the most human of all books because it stares the weaknesses we all share right in the face and finds ways to fight if not conquer them as well as pointing out strategies that are counterproductive. Lorde allows the reader to get inside her skin like no other writer, and for the first time ever, made me feel the anger, terror, fear, helplessness I have sensed in many if not all black people. And yet her greatest criticisms are not of whites, but especially of her black sisters and then her brothers. She clearly does not set herself apart because she knows she has had "my boot on a sister's face". Richard Adams wrote a story called "The Hole in the Sky". Most people never see it, but this book describes best of all what makes up that hole and what it feels like to see it.

An Amazing Book

As a Black female living in America, I could relate to a lot of what she said and she raised a lot of important points. Most importantly, she made me think. I enjoyed reading it. Unfortunately, there were a few parts that I had trouble understanding so I need to read it again, but the book is fantastic. She wrote wonderful letters, speeches, and essays. I'm looking forward to reading her poems. Recommended.

I didn't know I was a feminist.

I really don't like the term feminist. We are all female.
Our level of getting proactive about own lives and those of
other women are effective the same measure that choose
read, indulge our curiosity and ask questions. All the women
in this book do that. I am female, feminine and yes, I can now
embrace feminist. But I still remain un-smitten by pet labels and terms.
I wish we could all just simply be people first...change is slow, execpt
for when it's not. :-)

Driven by the steadily increasing cost pressure on European airports, operators need to develop new sources of revenue. The greatest po-tential in generating additional revenue to combine reasonable income with high profitability can be found in the non-aviation sector, particularly in the travel retail segment. The re-search, however, revealed that airport retail is not always a fast-selling item. The market experiences extensive challenges driven by advanced airline retail activities or online sales developments. In order to face the recent challenges, the importance of commercial revenues for airport operators needs to be evaluated firstly. Moreover, characteristics and specialties of travel retail have to be analyzed. Based on that, the thesis explores some of the key factors, such as market trends, economical changes and technical developments, which are leading to an ever-challenging environment for airport retail managers. Finally, the research paper aims at elaborating resulting challenges and future opportunities by providing new ideas and solutions in optimizing airport retail for European airports in general and Copenhagen Airport in particular. To conclude the master's thesis, a summary is presented reviewing all findings. The overall research results reveal that Copenhagen Airport's retail philosophy has adapted to the dynamic changes in the airport retail segment. However, there remains significant room for
