AS ALWAYS, AMAZING AND EFFECTIVE

I LOVED this book - as a person who has been researching the LOA phenomenon for years, I have found that Kelli Cooper has the most effective and failproof methods, advice and insights I have ever come across. Kelli has a brilliant writing style I have never seen before and it gets right down into your soul and makes a lasting impression. Kelli speaks to you the way your best, best friend would. No B.S., no fairy dust, that's what I like most about her writing style. Letting go has always been the biggest challenge for me and I can say that after reading this, my manifestations are coming more easily even though its only been a few days! I'm not even kidding; I am much more relaxed and confident about my abilities, so thank you so much Kelli, I look forward to the rest of the series!

Part of a great LOA e-book series

Excellent book about manifesting! Really useful and clearly written, practical advice. This book clarifies a lot about allowing manifestations and has plenty of examples that you can relate with and apply to your own situation. I downloaded my copy when it was free, but if you like Kelli's blog, or the work of Melody Fletcher, Bashar, Jeannette Maw, or Abraham-Hicks, buy this! It is a great read and very insightful.

Very informative, especially for new Congo Grey owner

I am new to the bird owner life and found this book very helpful. We have a 5 month old Grey. I received my book yesterday and have finished it already! The book was very informative for me, as a new owner. It gives the history of the Grey and helps the reader understand the Grey's natural instincts, personality, and behaviors. It also was very good at explaining what to watch for in the body language and vocals in regards to the Grey's temperament or possible illness. Very descriptive and great pictures. The book provides suggestions for helping the Grey adjust to new things, how to locate a vet, birdsitter, it discusses healthy diet options, and more. I highly recommend the book for any new bird owner of a Grey.

Lectures on Language Philosophy

John Langshaw Austin (March 28, 1911 - February 8, 1960) was born in Lancaster and Educated at Balliol College, before serving with MI6 during World War II. Later he became White's Professor of Moral Philosophy at Oxford from 1952 until his death in 1960. His language philosophy lectures form the basis for this book, which was compiled by G. J. Warnock with help from J. O. Urmson. The title was clearly chosen for its similarity to that "other" J. Austen's work, "Sense and Sensibility".

J. L. Austin challenged the sense-data theories of perception of the day. Specifically he takes aim at Alfred Jules Ayer's "The Foundation of Empirical Knowledge". He also talks about H. H. Price's "Perception", and G. J. Warnock's book on "Berkeley". Even though the book suffers a little from being formed from lectures rather than Austin writing a book on the subject, Warnock has done an excellent job of compiling the lectures, and the result is a very readable book, which can be enjoyed by readers of all backgrounds.

The entire book is only a little over 140 pages long, consisting of a foreword by G. J. Warnock, and then 11 sections based on the lectures which Austin gave between 1947 and 1959. It is unfortunate that Austin himself never put together a book, for it would be interesting to see how well it would match what G. J. Warnock has put together here. In lieu of that, I think readers will find this book accessible, humorous and insightful.

A minor masterpeice

One of those rare breed of philosophers who can actually write, with a whimsical humor, Austin was one of those chiefly responsible for demolishing the pretensions of the positivists, an arrogant group of Anglo-American intellectuals (with a few Poles and Viennese thrown in) who believed that the secrets of the Universe can be found by analysing the language of one particular intelligent biped, and treating its syntax in the same manner as the laws of physics are deduced with mathematics. Austin was one of those who pointed out the obvious; language evolved as a means of communication between people; as such words are far too complex enteties to be reduced to simple meanings that can then be played with in the form of symbols and all the 'problems' of philosophy thus magically solved. His skewering of A. J. Ayer, one of the principle exponents of this doctrine, is especially satisfying. The book itself contains almost no technical vocabulary at all,and hardly any words over ten letters, which is an achievement in itself. On the negative side it is completely deconstructive; it offers no positive insights into the mysteries of life whatsoever, if that is what you are looking for. But within its limits it is a gem, and in its day it virtually rescued philosophy from oblivion. One noteworthy factor about it; almost as much credit as the author must be given to the editor G.J. Warnock, who compiled it from lecture notes, and even includes a rather devastating critique of one of his own works in the final chapter.

Undermining the pretensions of philosophers...

This is a very interesting book. It belongs in the tradition of ordinary language philosophy. Austin believes that many philosophical problems arise because philosophers are not careful enough about how words are actually used. Philosophers ask, for example, questions like "what is real?" without understanding the different ways in which the term "real" is actually used in everyday speech. This gives rise to a whole host of pseudo-problems and mistaken philosophical doctrines. By analyzing words more carefully it is possible to dissolve those pseudo-problems and mistaken philosophical doctrines.

One of the primary goals of this book is to critique sense-datum theories of perception. Sense-datum theories claim that we do not ever perceive material objects directly. What we perceive are sense-data, and we infer material objects from those sense-data. Bertrand Russell presents this view of perception in his book The Problems of Philosophy. Austin argues that this view of perception is based on confusions about how we use words like "illusion" and "appears". Austin also argues against the notion that there are a certain class of statements that always serve as an epistemological foundation for another class of statements. It is often claimed, for example, that statements about sense-data are certain and serve as a foundation for our knowledge of material objects. But, as Austin points out, what kinds of statements serves as foundations, or evidence, for other statements depends on context. Austin ultimately argues for a kind of anti-foundationalism.

My own training is in Continental philosophy, so I am not as familiar with the tradition of philosophy that Austin is responding to. However, it seems to me that Austin is actually making an argument, throughout the book, that in some ways is not that different from Kant's. Kant argued that our concepts only have empirical validity, and are only legitimately used when they are employed empirically. Kant argued against any kind of transcendent use of our concepts. Austin seems to me to be arguing something similar. We all understand how words are used in our everyday lives, but when we try to use those same words in a metaphysical, or transcendent, sense, we fall into all sorts of confusion, and wind up creating pseudo-problems for ourselves.

When we talk about the word "real" for example. Philosophers often want to know about ultimate reality, and they wind up asking strange questions like "How can we be certain that this telephone is real?" In this context "real" is taken metaphysically. What is being asked about is the ultimate metaphysical status of the telephone. But what do we ordinarily mean when we ask "Is that telephone real?" Austin would argue that if we pick up the phone and we are able to use it to call people then this is all we ordinarily mean when we say the phone is real, and that is just what it means to be a real phone. This is one example of how Austin analyzes our everyday use of words in order to dissolve their metaphysical use, and the pseudo-problems the metaphysical use of terms gives rise to. We know the difference between a real phone and a fake phone in our everyday lives (of course, the reader should keep in mind that the term "real" can mean many different things in different contexts, I am simply focusing on one meaning which contrasts "real" to "fake" for the sake of an example).

Austin is a very clear writer, or speaker, since I guess this volume was based on lectures. Whatever the case may be, the book is very readable even without a strong background in analytic philosophy. Austin is a great polemicist, for lack of a better term, by which I simply mean: he is great at constructing arguments, and reducing other people's arguments to absurdity. The book really is a pleasure to read and contains a wealth of interesting insights. More than I have been able to contain, or even hint at, in this review. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in analytic philosophy, language philosophy, theories of perception, or epistemological problems.

About the Author

Neil Gaiman is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels Neverwhere, Stardust, American Gods, Coraline, Anansi Boys, The Graveyard Book, Good Omens (with Terry Pratchett), The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains; the Sandman series of graphic novels; and the story collections Smoke and Mirrors, Fragile Things, and Trigger Warning. Book forwards, introductions, speeches, and liner notes with wit and insight

Not every writer—not even many literary greats—could pull off a book like this. It’s a collection of random speeches, front matter from books (not his own), liner notes, and the occasional eulogy for individuals living and dead. While the book is organized into sections on topics like other authors, comic books, films, and music, it seems that organization derives organically from the topics on which Neil Gaiman is asked to comment--rather than a desire to tighten the book’s theme.

If you’re a Neil Gaiman fanboy/girl, you’ll need no excuse to read anything that he puts out (even though--if that is the case--you’ll probably have read much of this before in separate outings.) So the question is why the rest of us—who may enjoy Gaiman’s writing tremendously but who don’t qualify as fanboys / fangirls—should read this. The reason that it’s worth reading is that Neil Gaiman is funny, has a way of framing ideas that makes them thought-provoking and interesting, and frequently writes quotable bits of text that are essentially brain candy.

The book’s title comes from an essay on Gaiman’s experience attending the Oscars from the upper balcony. As mentioned, the book is divided into thematic sections--ten of them to be precise. The book starts with “Some Things I Believe,” which presents speeches on the virtue of reading, libraries, books, and bookstores. The next section discusses people he has known and worked with—largely writers and graphic artists. Then Gaiman offers thoughts on the nature of science fiction, again mostly through book forwards on seminal works from the genre. There is a section on films and Gaiman’s experience with them—several of his works have been made into films and many others have been considered. The next part is on comic books and the works and artists that influenced Gaiman. The next section bears the title “Introductions and Contradictions” and it offers introductions for various books (not Gaiman’s but those written for other writers.) There’s a musical section about a few recording artists including They Might be Giants, Lou Reed, and—of course—Gaiman’s wife Amanda Palmer. Next, Gaiman presents some introductions and forwards for works of fantasy. One section includes only a solitary entry--a commencement speech entitled “Make Good Art.” The final section is sort of a catchall of essays that includes the title piece and one on events in Syria.

I’d recommend this book for those who enjoy reading (or writing) in the genres for which Gaiman is known. His comments offer interesting insight, and you may learn about some books and authors that you’d never heard of before.

An enticing book about some things Neil Gaiman loves, cares about, and believes

To paraphrase the author, this book contains some things Neil Gaiman loves, cares about, and believes. It’s a collection of speeches, articles, introductions, and essays on a variety of topics ranging from light-hearted to serious. There’s something in here for every kind of Gaiman fan, whether you love his Sandman comics, his fantasy/sci-fi novels, his Dr. Who episodes, or all of the above. There are also pieces decrying the suppression of free speech and the civil war that has displaced millions of Syrians. Gaiman’s famous “Make Good Art” commencement speech is in here, too. Overall, Gaiman is articulate and enticing in whatever he writes about, and above all, this is a book for readers.

In one of the pieces near the beginning, a speech called “Why Our Future Depends on Libraries, Reading and Daydreaming,” Gaiman sets the tone when he says (one of my most favorite quotes in the book), “I’m going to suggest that reading fiction, that reading for pleasure, is one of the most important things one can do.” He admits that, in making such a strong plea for the importance of reading, “I’m biased as a writer. But,” he emphasizes, “I am much, much more biased as a reader.”

The View from the Cheap Seats shows his bias in spades. Truly, Gaiman is a reader’s writer: it seems you can’t wander through more than a few pages without tripping over another author or book he’s recommending wholeheartedly. But that is his intention: “I hope that, somewhere in here,” he says, “I will talk about a creator or their work—a book, perhaps, or even a film or a piece of music—that will intrigue you.” If you want to know which writers and artists influenced Gaiman, then and now, he’ll tell you in this book. My TBR has certainly grown from his many enticing recommendations.

However, The View from the Cheap Seats is more than a catalogue of books and works of art that have influenced Gaiman; it’s also a tribute to the many people who have touched his life. One of the things I love about being a Neil Gaiman fan is discovering with delight that he has a personal connection to other artists I admire. It’s like tracing a family lineage. I actually discovered Neil Gaiman in a roundabout way through Terry Pratchett. Years ago, I started reading Pratchett’s Discworld series and then found out that the two writers had co-authored a book called Good Omens. Although I started delving into Gaiman’s other work first before finally reading Good Omens years later, it thrilled me to no end knowing that two of my favorite fantasy writers not only knew each other but were also longtime friends and had written a book together. I remember, too, my excitement when I first discovered the friendship between Tori Amos and Neil Gaiman. I used to wonder who was this Neil she kept mentioning in her songs, and now I smile every time I hear the mentions, like it’s a special fan club secret. As a late-bloomer sci-fi fan, I’ve just started delving into Ray Bradbury, and I was happy to learn that Gaiman befriended Bradbury in his later years. The View from the Cheap Seats includes Gaiman’s tributes to all of these artists and many more, including, of course, his wife, the multi-talented, larger-than-life Amanda Palmer. So if you admire some of Gaiman’s friends, as I do, reading this book is like reading about a reunion of sorts: you begin to see family resemblances between Gaiman and the people he cares about.

As Gaiman explains, “Literature does not occur in a vacuum. It cannot be a monologue. It has to be a conversation, and new people, new readers, need to be brought into the conversation too.” With The View from the Cheap Seats, Gaiman’s inviting you and me to be part of the conversation.

P.S. The titular essay, “The View from the Cheap Seats,” is one of my favorites. I love how Gaiman can take an extraordinary situation like going to the Oscars and describe his experience of it in a way that makes him very human and relatable to the reader. I nodded and smiled throughout, thinking, “Oh, yes, if I ever went to the Oscars, that’s how I’d feel, too.”

Some gems, some not so much

When authors collect their various thoughts into one volume, not all of them will appeal to every reader, no matter how much you love that author. The pieces I enjoyed, I enjoyed immensely. And Gaiman delivered on his noble intention: he introduced me to some authors that I never before would have considered reading. And a musical artist or two as well!

A German national, Thomas Anderson is a specialist in German armored fighting vehicles of World War II. He has spent decades researching in archives throughout Germany and the rest of Europe to discover little known facts and never previously published photographs of the might of the Panzerwaffe. An original and novel work with just a few minor problems, would be appreciated by even those knowledgeable in the field

Many, if not most, multi-hundred page books published by Osprey publishing tend to be compilations of previously published Osprey books as opposed to being original works. Hence the first that should be said is about the book is that it is not compilation of previously published Osprey publications on German armour. Instead it is a new original work. This book, like so many Osprey publications (especially the older ones), is also not just a regurgitation or summary of previously published secondary sources. The author, Thomas Anderson, is fluent in German and has made very good use of his German through his very extensive use of original German language sources contained in the US and Germany and only relatively minor use of secondary sources.

In a nutshell the book is primarily about how german armoured doctrine developed over the pre-war and early war period, at a relatively high level (strategic and operational as opposed to tactical), organizational structure of panzer units (from divisional level down to platoon) and development over the same period, how the physical characteristics of the vechicles developed and a history of early war armoured battles (again, at a high level strategic and operational level as opposed to tactical level). Much of this discussion is based, as previously mentioned, on original German language documents. Hence it is not a rehash or synopsis of previously published material. It is very nice to see, for once, a novel discussion of german armoured doctrine, organizational structure, vehicles and battles. One area the book is particulary strong ,regarding novelty, are the many photographs. A very large number (but not all) are new and have either never or rarely been published before.

The book does suffer from a few weaknesses that prevent it from being worthy of five star rating. One is that, considering the discussion of vehicle's physical characteristics, there are no cut-aways or other illustrations showing the interiors or exteriors of vehicles. Related to this, it would have been nice to see comparative illustrations between German vehicles and those of England, Poland, France and the Soviet Union to better show the similarities and differences between these vehicle's physical characteristics. Another weakness is the lack of maps to discuss how campaigns progressed at the strategic and operational level. Very ironic given the space the book uses to discuss strategic and operational actions. Unfortunately this lack of comparison and contrast also extends to many other areas such as individual tank crew training for example (Germany made great efforts to insure that tank crews were trained together as an integral unit and were kept together as much as possible while other nations did not). A third problem is that organizational structures between Germany and other nations are not compared.

Despite these problems the book is still very original and novel. It is one that even those who are fairly knowledgeable in this field would probably appreciate and value. Four stars.
